Which raises the question, why should the state be in the business of marriage in the first place?
Precisely!

Scrambling the definition of marriage has been a shock to our fundamental understanding of human social relations and institutions. One major effect will be that sexual fidelity will be detached from the commitment of marriage.
That is ridiculous, unsupported and frankly silly. Allowing gay folks to show commitment for one another on a equal basis as anyone else will cause infidelity? Yah, sure, and rain causes sunburn.

As a happily married father of two, celebrating my 21st anniversary with my wife, I find the suggestion that treating others fairly will destroy my marriage to be completely absurd.

Why should it be the government's job to protect the sanctity of marriage?
Because marriage in this country is a government sanctified institution... always has been. It is in the governments best interests to protect an institution that promotes family ideals and helps to rear individuals who will have a strong foundation for the diffficult things that society throws out at them.

This government is of, by and for the people, not the other way around.

I'm not seeing any of that in my copy of the Constitution.

You're right, children raised by a gay couple wouldn't be able to handle difficult things thrown at them by society.

If only I could saith, so should I.

Again, divorce is not caused by gays. Plain and simple. If there is an exception it'd be a truly bizarre situation.
