Double Standard?

I know this is a month late but oh well here goes.

YouTube - Rosie Ching Chong O'Donnell

I don't remember hearing about this anywhere. Why? Why when somebody says something about african americans do people get all upset but Rosie ODonnell says something like this and then doesn't really get any coverage on media whatsoever. Is this a double standard or did I just miss this.

I'm sure she gets called a fat pig on a daily basis. But how many times do the people get a free pass for calling her fat pig? Aside from Donald Trump getting a little press about it lately, not many times I can recall.

But the people calling her a fat pig do not have millions of viewers. I am specifically wondering why there is a difference between Rosie ODonnell making Ching-chong comments and calling an African American a nigger.

I am an Asian-American. I recieved the ching-chong comments as an elementary kid. They aren't necessarily a warm pleasant feeling. While I realize she was trying to be funny, I still wonder why she can't keep her fat ass shut.

Because she is a self important, egoistic, thoughtless and mindless celebrity. Her agenda is what is important. She would, of course, object strongly to similar slights against homosexuals, but you Asians are fair game.

Blacks tend to kick up more of a fuss when racism is directed at them, whereas Asians tend not to blow everything out of proportion. Plus half the white folks out there still feel guilty about the whole slavery thing.

Three points -

1. Rosie is a comedienne. Comediennes make fun of people. Sometimes they cross the line. This time she did. If you see the original clip, Rosie wasn't calling anyone names. She was doing a dreadful attempt at imitating the sound of the Chinese language. Not that different from the Swedish chef's "mock Swedish" on the old Muppet Show.

2. Rosie apologized. O'Donnell 'sorry' for China jibes

3. Michelle Malkin is a rightwing lunatic and not one to be criticizing anyone for ethnic insensitivity. She wrote a book defending the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII. Her book is full of so many inaccuracies and outright lies that it was the subject of an open letter by the Historians' Committee for Fairness:
Quote:
Malkin is not a historian, and she states that she relied almost exclusively on research conducted or collected by others. Her book, which purports to defend the wartime treatment of Japanese Americans, did not go through peer review before publication. This work presents a version of history that is contradicted by several decades of scholarly research, including works by the official historian of the United States Army and an official U.S. government commission. In fact, the author's presentation of events is so distorted and historically inaccurate that, when challenged by reputable historians, she has herself conceded that her main thesis in incorrect, namely that the MAGIC intercepts of prewar Japanese diplomatic cable traffic, explain and justify the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans. As Malkin states, her critics have noted that "once the decision was made to evacuate ethnic Japanese from the West Coast, many ancillary decisions were made--and MAGIC doesn't explain all or even most of them. True...."
She is an admirer of Ann Coulter and a defender of Joshua Belile, the Marine who wrote and performed Hadji Girl, a song glorifying the killing of Iraqi civilians.

So for Malkin to be criticizing Rosie is the cheapest form of hypocrisy and dishonesty or the exactly the sort of crap one can expect from Michelle Malkin.

I don't.

I had nothing to do with slavery, nor did my family, so I'll be damned if I'm gonna take the blame for the select of my race in the past.

As it goes for Rosie, she's just a loud mouthed bitch who's got an audience who will listen to her ramble on about her own uneducated opinions.

And being a gay celebrity, she seems to think that gives her more right to be a loud mouth.

I agree; I have nothing but contempt for these self-hating whites. Still, it's a possible explanation as to why white on black racism gets so much condemnation compared to white on Asian, or indeed black on white.

Not only did O'Donnel insult the Asian American community, it was reported that her press person came out the next day and said: "Rosie's says if they can't relate to the ethnic humor, that's their fault not hers."

Talk about pouring gasoline on the fire. But yes, Rosie gets a free pass at this ethnic insulting behavior because she is part of the Follywood crowd.

Not to defend the right, but if Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Laura Ingram ever said this ching chong shit, they would be nailed to the proverbial cross.

Therefore, one is forced to conclude since Rosie is a Follywood darling, she was let off with little notice from the media.

So, I suppose it would be humourous for her to imitate Amos N Andy, Aunt Jemimah, or Kingfisher and their dialect? Or the old Charlie Chan character and his dialect? Or Tonto and his dialect. Why stop there? I guess comediennes can imitate anyone's dialect and not be accused of insensitivity. I think they require new material if this is the case.

2. Rosie apologized
Here is an interpretation of her apology.

E! News - Rosie Really Sorry for "Ching-Chong" Crack - Rosie O'Donnell | Barbara Walters | Kelly Ripa | Clay Aiken

Quote:
Rosie O'Donnell is sorry you don't get her sense of humor—and that she might have offended you. And she's pretty sure it won't happen again.

The loose-lipped View host has issued something of an apology for repeatedly using the phrase "ching chong" while speaking in mock Chinese tones last week, saying that she "never intended to hurt anyone."

"This apparently was very offensive to a lot of Asian people," she said on Thursday's show, going on to note that she didn't realize she had crossed a P.C. line until she chatted about the incident with an Asian staff member.

"So apparently 'ching-chong,' unbeknownst to me, is a very offensive way to make fun, quote unquote, or mock, Asian accents. Some people have told me it's as bad as the N-word. I was like, really? I didn't know that."

While O'Donnell said she was "sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground" with the taunt, she also claimed that, as far as her comments go, "there's a good chance that I'll do something like that again."

"Not on purpose," she added.

Unsurprisingly, the provisional mea culpa didn't sit well with at least one Asian organization.
And here is another protest:

Vanessa Hua, Chronicle Staff Writer

Quote:
Ever since comedian Rosie O'Donnell mocked spoken Chinese, repeating "ching chong" over and over on "The View" talk show, a video clip of her performance has been circulating on the Internet -- offering immediate and indisputable proof.

As with comedian Michael Richards' ranting use of a racial slur -- recorded on a camera phone -- that flew around the Web in November, new technology is helping stir public outcry over O'Donnell's remarks.

So far, she has not apologized for her Dec. 5 comments as Asian Americans in the Bay Area and across the country are demanding.

But she has responded on her blog at r blog.

She writes that she "wasn't mocking / that's my best impression" and that her "bad accent was not meant to insult or degrade / linguistic incompetence -- guilty / mocking -- never." She tells one detractor to go "f- urself."

Spoofing a language belittles the people who speak it, community leaders say. They also say it's disappointing to hear such insensitivity from O'Donnell, who has championed gay and lesbian rights and taken others to task for being homophobic.

"She's shrugging it off, saying get over it, but it's hypocritical," said Pauline Sze, 20, a UC Berkeley student and an editor of Hardboiled, a news magazine focusing on Asian American issues. "It devalues the language and mocks the people who speak it."

Okay for the record: I'm not a fan of Michelle Malkin. However she was not criticizing Rosie because she believes she is morally superior she is criticizing Rosie because she felt offended by the comments. You don't understand what it feels like to be made fun of like that. I am Japanese. I got the ching chong comments and that is nothing like what the japanese language sounds like. My mother (my father is Irish Italian my mother is Japanese) was American born she had no accent. In Michelle case however her parents were born in the Philippines. They had an accent. So as a child those ching chong comments were probably harder hitting.

As for Rosie's "apology"... Apology not accepted

I'm sorry that just pissed me more off. The biggest thing is that it didn't sound like a heartfelt apology, more of a...well I thought it was funny, if you didn't I'm sorry. And the big fat pig confused Japanese with Chinese which is a completely different country, language, accent all together. I guess its just a Whitey thing. While its true some Asians were not offended (as seen in the end of the video). Many were and I think that there was an extreme double standard between Rosie and the Chinese and similar racial comments targeted towards African Americans, Native Americans, etc.

One more thing...that's kind of hypocritical of Rosie. She gets on her high horse about homosexual comments and "homophobia" but she doesn't get angry at racial remarks.

Hmmm, I'm not so sure. How would you like to be the ghost writer hired to help Bush create his memoirs?

Rosie's suckiness doesn't have a thing to do with being gay. It has everything to do with being Rosie. Another "worst job ever", having to be Rosie.

No, I don't think it has to do with her being gay, or at least it shouldn't, but as soon as she came out as being gay (big surprise) I've noticed she's been getting much more cocky (No pun intended) with what she says and I feel she's been playing the Gay card "If people make fun of us, I'll make fun of them" so to speak.

She's a fokking bitch who's head not only go stuck so far up her arse, but she's got a media outlet to fuel her ignorant frame of mind.

She should be fired in my opinion..... nobody should be allowed to be on national tv and spout out racist comments, weither or not you felt they were funny.

Well I wouldn't go this far. ABC is a private broadcaster and as such can promote any viewpoint they wish to promote. It is perhaps more intelligent to realize Rosie for what she is, and what she promotes, and by association, the show and the network. Intelligent people will simply ignore and/or protest her, the show and eventually the network, and she will go away.

Yeah, but if you can get charged for racial slurs out in the streets, why they hell should she get a safe haven on tv, where everybody can hear her moronic opinion.

If you don't support Malkin why post her idiotic rant? Malkin is a hypocrite and a liar. She went after Rosie because Malkin perceives Rosie as being a representative of the "left" whatever that may be.

Which is worse I wonder, a few stupid comments by a comedienne or locking people up in concentration camps because of they are of Japanese heritage? Malkin opposes the first but wrote an entire book justifying the second. Odd that you are apparently more offended by Rosie’s stupid routine than you are by Malkin justifying the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII.

The thread is titled "Double Standard." The link is to Malkin's "Vent". Malkin ranks right up there, in my view anyway, with Ann Coulter for being bigotted and dishonest.

If ROC is indeed part Japanese, I think it is a fair observation that it is odd that he seems more offended by Rosie’s stupid routine than he is by Malkin's justifying the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII. That strikes me as a whopper of a double standard.
