Favorite educational TV program?

I don't know how many of you out there enjoy educational forms of Television, and was wondering of those that do watch, what do you enjoy?

I have a new favorite, that I just learned about.

Personal Defense TV
SHOW INFORMATION -Personal Defense TV -The Outdoor Channel

This is an excellent program, and they do a good job from what I have seen of trying to RE-introduce modern America to armed self-defense, and welcome new or interested people into the shooting culture.

Great contributors, such as Massad Ayoob, lend their name and credits to the program. A great program for introducing people to PRACTICAL self-defense training, and a great source for information and leads to schools who specialize in self-defense, armed and unarmed.

Some of my other educational programs, that are regularly scheduled.

This Old House on PBS
Musclecar on Spike TV
Hot Rod Television on Spike TV
Extreme 4X4 on Spike TV
Trucks on Spike TV

How about you folks?

Anything with Ray Mears presenting it, such as Bushcraft. Inspiring, informative and strangely calming.

I love the Discover Channel especially Discovery Earth and something called 100 Greatest Discoverys with Bill Nye. I liked when they were talking about the life of Darwin and ancient species of water life. Oh and for a classic, The Magic Schoolbus

XD

I also love, LOVE documentarys.

A bit off the subject of educational, has anyone had a chance to see the movie Thank You for Smoking?

I think it puts insight to how to successfully debate a topic that most people are against and still come out winning.

How it's Made, Histories Mysteries, Mythbusters(<3 Kari- I'd go straighter for her any time), and Frontline(which you can watch online for free here: FRONTLINE: watch online | PBS ) are some of my favorites.

I forgot one- my favorite documentary on TV ever was this show that recently stopped airing on the National Geographic Channel Called Taboo. It was a freaky little series detailing some of the "fringe" cultural rituals out there in the world today, including a guy drinking his own urine for sustenance, the san pedro cactus's usage as a healing drug in South America, and the entire culture surrounding sex changes and the like. Really neat stuff, I tell you.

Daily Planet (Discovery Channel Canada) is mine as it is a science based semi-news program which always has interesting stories and sometimes has theme weeks which get different angles at a theme over the coarse of a week.

Everything on the Science Channel except anything about dinosaurs. For some reason that subject makes me think I'll need to work up an interest just to be apathetic about it.

Planet Earth on BBC

what an amazing wildlife programme, where they zoom in from satellite pictures of the earth to extreme close ups.

The slow mo sequence of the great white shark leaping out of the water to eat a seal in mid air was one of the best pieces of TV i have ever seen.

I also like the way that they show you how the sequences were filmed at the end, so you know how much hard work they put into it.

I was sticking to mainly regualry scheduled programs, but I forgot to list programs like NOVA, and my intrest in channels like discovery, discovery times, etc.

I love documentaries for the most part, but I tend to gravitate toward the more all inclusive programs like Cosmos.

Well if you want something out of the norm, there's "Kink" which is aired here in Canada on Show Case. A lot of weird crap is on there.... not weird per say.... just weird for me.

But my above all and be all show that taught me the most in my lifetime and has yet to be matched:

Lorne Greene's New Wilderness.

I haven't seen that Prax, I will keep my eyes open for it.

Have you ever seen the PBS special titled "Alone in the Wilderness"?
Fantastic self-edu-docu-biography (?) about a man who lives almost entirely off nature, alone, in the Western Alaskan wilderness for years, a good portion of his life actually. Built his own home, made a good portion of his own tools (could have made them all if he needed to I think, but even he wasn't that sadomasichistic), and truly showed the spirit and ability of man to adapt and be one with nature while still living in relative luxury.

Well Lorne Greene's show was back in 1982 and lasted only in the 80's. So chances are you won't see it.

I never seen that show you speak of, but I've seen Survivorman on Outdoor Life Network here in Canada.... he's thrown into various locations on the planet and he has to survive to either make it out to civilization or rescue in 7 days.

It's very good for information, but at times, he screws up and makes things worse for himself at times.... but lack of food and such can make your judgment flawed at times.

Yep, I watch it, but not regularly, just when he covers enviroments I don't how to survive in. He shows a lot of little known secrets occassionally also.

Alone in the Wilderness is worth watching for. I can't reccommend it highly enough.

When did propaganda become educational?

Heh, Fascism 101.

I suppose the authoritarian mindset is a learned behavior, but I am definately against labeling The Factor "educational" in the classic sense.
