Prisoner #284797 - Jack Kevorkian - released from jail

Quote:
After more than eight years in prison, a frail Dr. Jack Kevorkian will be paroled in June with a promise that he won't assist in any more suicides, a prison spokesman said Wednesday.

Leo Lalonde, the corrections spokesman, would not provide further details.

Kevorkian, once the nation's most vocal advocate of assisted suicide for the terminally ill, is serving a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree murder in the 1998 poisoning of Thomas Youk, 52, an Oakland County man with Lou Gehrig's disease. Michigan banned assisted suicide in 1998.

Youk's death was videotaped and shown on CBS' "60 Minutes."

Kevorkian, who claimed to have assisted in at least 130 deaths in the 1990s, called it a mercy killing.

Mayer Morganroth, Kevorkian's attorney, said this summer that Kevorkian, now 78, was suffering from hepatitis C and diabetes, that his weight had dropped to 113 pounds and that he had less than a year to live.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm ordered corrections authorities to carry out an independent medical evaluation of Kevorkian, but did not commute the retired pathologist's sentence, as Morganroth had hoped.

Kevorkian has always been eligible for parole on June 1, 2007, and will now be released on that date, Lalonde said. He directed calls seeking further comment to Russ Marlan, another state corrections spokesman who did not immediately return calls Wednesday.

If Kevorkian is released on June 1, he will have spent close to 3,000 days in prison since being sentenced in April 1999.

He has promised he would not assist in a suicide if he was released from prison.

I wonder, will the controversy and social debate he was resposible for die when he does or will it continue?

The people he "killed" were dying anyway. And they asked him to help them.

He knew he'd get locked up though. He was making a statement by doing Youk. Dr K knew the "authorities" were breathing down his neck, but he chose to go for it anyhow. I am happy for him to be released. He hurt no one.

He beat 100+ some other lawsuits though. Foolish of him to administer the fatal dose himself, without a license or one of his machines, and video tape the whole thing, that's murder. Top it off with representing himself in court, with the video tape as "evidence" in your defense??? .... dummy.

Yeah, the only thing he did wrong was doing the deed himself.

Other than that, I agree that he did nothing wrong.

If you really look into it, he denied helping hundreds of people because they weren't terminal, or because they were depressed.

He only assisted terminal patients.

Just sucks that what I can designate legally on paper he couldn't assist while the person is still of sound mind.

I think "model" is a strange career choice. Not model/actress/singer... just, model. I just got duped into watching a video on YouTube of a model award show. No decernable talent or skill. They were given trophies, for "most graceful" and such. I can't think of anyone less deserving.

What is this? Stream of consciousness? Stay on topic, Comp!

Sick and evil that he was ever jailed in the first place. A knee jerk reaction to whereever death is concerned I suppose.

Medical Doctor is a strange career choice? What do you do for a living?

It'll continue.

I attend a high school law course, and the issue was brought up a few weeks ago without mention of Kevorkian. The general consensus was that assisted suicide was okay *under certain circumstances*, however the class was still primarily divided.
