![]() Brb, France Location: Scotland, Central Lowlands Posts: 2,877 | Contraception in methadone Recently, MSP Duncan McNeil suggested that some form of oral contraception should be included in methadone to prevent heroin addicts from having children. This suggestion sparked outrage and led to him being called a Nazi. However, 50,000 children in Scotland live with drug abusing parents and 300 babies a year are born addicted to heroin as a result of parent's drug use during pregnancy. With statistics like this, should heroin addicts really be allowed to have children? Is Duncan McNeil's suggestion a serious infringement of civil liberties, or one of the only credible ways of protecting children from their parent's drug abuse? What are your thoughts? http://www.theherald.co.uk/politics/61856.html The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom. |

| Retired Posts: 7,312 | I am for forced contraception of a few different groups of people. Drug addicts, welfare recipients of any kind, people who have had kids taken away for horrible abuse, republicans (just seeing if you were paying attention!! lol).... I also think recipients of any assistance should underfo drug testing - I had a neighbor for whom HUD paid rent and utilities, DES paid food stamps, medicaid, and $140/month cash. The guy smoked crystal all the time, and shared these benefits with his boyfriend! "...with like-minded people one cannot discuss. ![]() SUSPENDED (1 Week) Posts: 3,571 | I'm all for forced contraception of EVERYONE. My little sister is adopted. During her adoption process I learned that any idiot with a high enough sperm count can make a baby and be entitled to lord over it. However, anyone who wants to adopt a child can expect the most thorough screening imaginable. The idea is that adoption agencies don't want unfit parents getting hold of children... ... but wait! That leaves the door open for this scenario: "We've totally failed all your tests and wouldn't be trusted to adopt a child if we were the last couple on Earth? Come on, honey. We're going to make a kid the old-fashioned way!" If society is going to end up paying for you & your kid then society should have the right to say whether or not you're ready to have a kid. The process is already in place. It would work EXACTLY like adopting a child, except instead of getting to adopt, you get your egg production / sperm working again. |

| Igneous Magma Posts: 322 | This, I am an advocate for, though I am opposed to what I can only speculate here http://www.volconvo.com/forums/showthread.php?p=416292 Please keep in mind that I could not access the actual article under debate, and therefore only gave my views on if it is a good thing to offer money to drug addicts in return for sterilization/long term birth control. And that it is apparently a one woman crusade funded by rich people. Anyway, this I am ok with, as the addict is at least somewhat seeking help already by going to the methadone clinic every day, AND it is provided by a service that must hold compliance with the government. But, it seems that I am unable to actually look at this article, as well, but it's over a year old so, understandable. There's a couple types that go down to the methadone clinic. Couldn't get a hit, so go to the clinic and sign their name and piss for one. They are still deep in addiction and so it would damage them very much to get pregnant. Physically, emotionally, and then, if somehow the pregnancy came to term the child would have little to no chance of survival. Trying to kick, not really all that serious, showing up semi-regularly but seriously, it is hard to get off heroin. (No- I was never addicted to heroin, but I've known people, I can read, and it is the most physically/psychologically addictive drug, they say.) It truly is a much better outlook in this user's mind to stay on, than feel as if you are dying for weeks. But, they want off, and they try, and it is hard. So, again, real bad for them to get pregnant now. So, oral contraception = good public benefit. Also, most heroin addicts do not want to be using anymore. Yeah, of course, they did it to themselves. But once they do, do you have to lose all compassion for them? They're still people. ...
