| FARMHOUSE Location: Florida State University Posts: 33 | 14 Year Old Boy Beat to Death in Bay County Boot Camp Parents Want Charges in Boot Camp Death Pathologist: Beating Caused Boot Camp Death Furor Grows Over Boot Camp Death I haven't been on these boards in quite some time...but looking through them tonight I failed to see anything about the Martin Lee Anderson case after searching through the pages. These articles are compiled over the past four months since the death of a 14 year old black boy at a Bay County (Panama City, FL) juvenile boot camp. There is video in the first clip of the boy being beaten by a number of guards under the supervision of the camp nurse. The articles explain everything that has happened since the boys January death to present...last week a sit in was held in Gov. Jeb Bush's office by a number of students from FSU, FAMU, and Tallahassee Community College demanding justice be served. Days later a march was held here in Tallahassee to demand answers and to ensure justice is served. I hope you all read the articles...this is truly a tragic story with a great loss to the young boy's family. Let me know what you think... This was a social experiment doomed to failure from day one. Shame on the parents who allowed their kids to be dumped into these camps. Their responsibility to properly parent their children is not absolved by letting the state parent for them. I have no problem with youth programs to redirect criminal boys, like boot camps. But assault by guards and ultimately wrongful death or murder is not necessary to the program. Quote:

| Untrained Fodder Location: Alabama Posts: 1,354 | You guys are speaking as if guards in boot camps are allowed or instructed to beat the kids. Okay, just because a few guards were bad...does that mean we should abolish it all? Should we abolish prison too? How about cops, not all cops are saints, some cops break the law, should we abolish the police? Lets just all be anarchists and let everyone go about all willy nilly and be completely darwinistic...fyi that is sarcasm. Im not saying that I think boot camp is a real solution or that I support boot camp. Im simply pointing out that so far people have leaped to the conclusion that it should be abolished without making any sort of argument for their point of veiw. I personally think that what the guards did was lazy. What they did was not an example of military discipline. Making him do flutter kicks, push ups, duck walks, running in place, holding a 10 pound stick over his head, putting him in the "front leaning rest position" or at a half squat ith his arms out in front of him for inordinate periods of time...that is military discipline, and beleive me, it is VERY effective. Clean toe caps and a filthy mouth! Low morals and high morale! |

I might start by having them go back and apologize to their victims, even if it were only their own family, and learn that their actions have ramifications they didn't consider. I might suggest some role-playing situations in which they were placed in the position of the victim to learn empathy and the results of their behaviors. What they need to learn is that all their actions have real world effects, how those effects can come back to haunt them and how to be responsible for their actions.
