Star Spangled Banner in Spanish

Adam Kidron has created Nuestro Himno by translating The Star Spangled Banner into Spanish, done as a digital recording and released it as a hit.

Quote:
Kidron enlisted the vocals and instruments of dozens of Latino musicians, including the hip-hop star Pitbull and the singer Carlos Ponce, to turn the theme song of the American soul into something which everyone from south of the Rio Grande can sing - especially if their patriotic fervour isn't matched by their ability to speak English
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4956834.stm

Quote:
Apparently Kidron was vexed by the sight of tens of thousands of illegal and legal migrants demonstrating on the streets of LA, New York and Washington, waving the Mexican flag, when they should have been unfurling - and singing - the Star Spangled Banner.
Between weightier matters like Iran's nuclear threat and prices at the pump, the beleaguered president stood in the Rose Garden of the White House on Friday, looking very earnest.

Quote:
He tried to nip this part of the immigration debate in the bud by declaring flatly that the anthem should be sung in English and that anyone coming to live in this country should learn English. He stumbled on the word English but the point was taken.

So how do you feel about this expression of bilingualism?

I think its more important that people understand what the lyrics mean than that they sing it in the "right" language.

Why bother to translate? The song is all hyperbole, all about the flag...land of the free (snort) home of the brave (if you are armed with DU and white phosphorus)

A better national anthem would be America the Beautiful. The reason the elitists don't like that one? "brotherhood from sea to shining sea"...see? too Commie...

You know, I'm a pretty open minded, non-prejudiced, multi-cultural type of guy, but for some reason this rubs me the wrong way. I have quite a few Latino friends from several different countries, and I never have any issues with any of these people.

Yet somehow, it seems to me that you wish to profess your love for your new found country, you probably should sing it's praises in their native tongue, or risk alienating everybody who wasn't already one hundred percent on your side. ( Which seems to be what is happening with my opinion of this situation now. )

I guess this whole story seems like a great big sociological experiment to me. ( It was suggested by a Brit, and them prompty carried out by unknown forces. ) I find myself wondering how that guy would feel listening to an Arabic version of God Save the Queen, and if I should be suggesting that very premise to some Muslim living in England.

Hey, it would only be fair.

How can we claim English as our "native tongue" when we borrowed it from the British? Our truly native tongues would be Navajo, Hopi, etc.
This is a nation that only exists today due to immigration, and our forefathers brought along their native cultures when they immigrated. We are a mutt nation.

It sure does seem to be taking our attention away from Bush's handling of the economy, the war in Iraq, his dwindling popularity and the price of gas though, doesn't it?

Los americanos son idiotas y son dirigidos como oveja, huh?

Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots.

The Mexican National Anthem (Translation)

Mexicans, to the Cry of Battle
CHORUS:
Mexicans, when the war cry is heard,
Have sword and bridle ready.
Let the earth's foundations tremble
At the loud cannon's roar.

May the divine archangel crown your brow,
Oh fatherland, with an olive branch of peace,
For your eternal destiny has been written
In heaven by the finger of God.
But should a foreign enemy
Dare to profane your soil with his tread,
Know, beloved fatherland, that heaven gave you
A soldier in each of your sons.

CHORUS

War, war without truce against who would attempt
to blemish the honor of the fatherland!
War, war! The patriotic banners
saturate in waves of blood.
War, war! On the mount, in the vale
The terrifying cannon thunder
and the echoes nobly resound
to the cries of union! liberty!

CHORUS

Fatherland, before your children become unarmed
Beneath the yoke their necks in sway,
May your countryside be watered with blood,
On blood their feet trample.
And may your temples, palaces and towers
crumble in horrid crash,
and their ruins exist saying:
The fatherland was made of one thousand heroes here.

Now, I don't know the star spangled banner word for word.. but that doesn't look anything like the song... O.o

It's cool and all... but why even call it the Mexican version?

It's the National Anthem of Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. You know, the nation of Mexico, south of California?

It has nothing to do with the Star-Spangled Banner...

Why did you post the translation, jose?

The National Anthem is abused all of the time. I don't care if people sing a version they are comfortable with in their own culture. I liked Jimi's version. A time and place for everything. Play the original version when it is important. I prefer America the Beautiful anyway.
