but I note you didn't even find ten to list,
You would probably not have even heard of any of the others on my list.

Alexi Laiho, Herman Li, Jani Liimatainen, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny.

    Pat Metheny...

The others: Allan Holdsworth, I only have access to one recording, All Night Wrong
I admit he is not familiar to me as most of the others are, but this thread is to acquaint our friends with stuff we like and possibly to share our joy. So I'm checking Holdsworth out.

Sonata Arctica, Jani Liimitainen, I got no access to their stuff.

Herman Li, I confess I am not a fan of power metal, and find their fascination with darkness incomprehensible, but admire fast licks, technical expertise, and soaring solos.

Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom, sorta the same as above...I hate death metal vocals, and despise satanic imagery and antiChristian themes, while acknowledging the guitar mastery...

Dragonforce are not a dark band, at all. They openly say that they are not to be taken seriously and all they sing about is nonsense. Most of their lyrics are based on computer games and Lord of the rings, from what I can gather.

Well thats fair enough, Children of Bodom aren't for you.

There have been many great guitarists, just in my lifetime. I think the instrument has reached a lot of new audiences since it was invented as a classical derivative of the lute. Lots of folks play nothing but electrics these days.

But who would you regard as the greatest instrumentalist on the stringed box? Maybe a top ten list would be worth arguing about. A lot of your preferences will undoubtedly be derived from your taste in music, but at least try to consider genres other than your own personal favorites.

Rolling Stone did a list a while back: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/sto...ion=6.0.12.857
I have to say ranking Frank Zappa down at # 45 has gotta be wrong

My list: Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, George Harrison, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Jorge Strunz, Ardeshir Farah
Besides the obvious that have already been listed. Not in priority of order.

    Andre Segovia Classical

Leo Kotke for folk / acoustic 6 and 12 string. Sounds like 2 guys playing.

Rory Gallagher. Irish Rocker who was a crowd pleaser. Deceased from the drink

Roy Buchannon for electric blues Passed over.

BB King for blues w/ Lucille. The quintessinal bluesman still going strong.

Buddy Guy. The tops in small club bluesmen.

Jorma Kaukonen. He and Jack Cassidy made it sound so easy.

Duane Allman. Melodic slide work with EC on Layla and Live at the Filmore w/A.B. B.

NB: Agree with Pat about Zappa. A classical trained musician whose arrangemets are still innovative. Check the Hot Rats cuts for things like Peaches En Regatta, WIllie the Pimp, etc..

Edit: Sorry Aequo & MB, I just noticed you both listed Duaney Boy.

I've had a love for 12-string acoustic guitars since I was 15 and my first girlfriend played one.
I'm in the Vai, Satriani, and Fripp camp. I have every one of their albums. On the jazz side, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Stanley Jordan, Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, John Pizzarelli and Lee Ritenour rank among my favorites. I'm also a big fan of many of the flamenco artists recording today. Latin jazz is soul music. :)
If you like 12 string acoustic, check out Leo Kotke. He will blow you away. :)

Bah, people who put Hendix at the top of their list, even in their top 10 are deaply confused.

They miss out the like of Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Fripp, Gilmour, etc.
Except for Fripp and Gilmour, that's an utter cheesefest. And yes, Hendrix tops my list.

Here is my list--it's subject to change, of course:

    1. Hendrix (Listen to the solos on "All Along the Watchtower" and get back to me).
    2. Tom Morello
    3. Frank Zappa
    5. Tony Iommi
    6. Dick Dale
    7. Buckethead
    8. Noodles & Dexter Holland (of the Offspring--for the wall of guitar sound on Smash)
    9. Chuck Berry/Bo Diddley (I have a record of them playing together and it is awesome)
    10. Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth)
    11. Leo Kotke (I added him because someone else mentione him here--also, Ry Cooder is pretty innovative).

I should include myself to the list:

Gramps.. Sure glad someone else around here knows of, and appreciates, Leo. I have been following him since 1970 when I saw him play in Putney Vemont. I just wanted to quit playing because I knew I could never reach that level of competence. Talk about being blown away.

People should just experience Machine # 9...........He did a great rendition of World's turning as well. If one likes 12 string acoustic, they have to listen to Kotke. :)

I like his tone a lot. And it's not squeeky clean, perfect music, too. It's both delicate sounding and raw.
