The Emancipation Proclamation--which freed only those slaves in rebel states, not the north--was preceded by nine months by Lincoln's Emancipation Act of DC.........which paid each slave's master a sum of $300 for said slave's freedom, and furthermore, offered each slave up to $100 if he would emigrate to another country.
Question: Why was this treatment not afforded to slaveowners and their charges in the South?
As to the "hillbillies" crack, perhaps you would like to know that NC had more colleges in the 1830's than did Massachusetts.
And the tax situation of that day clearly was an abuse by the North upon the South..........who paid 80% of the revenues collected in the ten years prior to the war, but recieved benefit of federal spending of only 20%.
But, perhaps that is considered fair by socialist elites and crooks of similar cloth.
