If I had been there with my children, I would have looked at the two signs, read the philosophical one, then pointed to the man and said "look, kids, there's someone who understands what being an American is all about. If you want social justice you have to fight for it."

It gives me the right to consider that a person may be threatening me, which allows me to deter the threat. Under the right circumstance, I would be justified in detaining him forcefully. Shooting him....it would depend entirely on the context of the threat.

It's reasonable to assume that anyone in the process of robbing a bank likely is armed in some manner and, as typical conveyance of robbery, intends to use some form of violence to gain compliance.
