Why can't socialist countries just trade with capitalist countries? Why does the entire world have to be socialist for socialism to work?

I don't care about the skills required. I'm not fond of homelessness. But you think charity can solve everything that capitalism can't, so that explains a lot.
No one is fond of homelessness, that's why you should be willing to do what it takes to take care of your self & family, not rely on some imaginary economic system/government that will save you.

It would be a need based system. "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need", etc.
I need a Ferrari...no really, I do. Do you think your system will make that happen?

Because they enjoy it? I've never talked to a medical student who was going into the field solely to make money. Believe it or not, money is not the sole motivating factor in everything. Shocking, isn't it?
These medical students who are not going in to the field "solely to make money" are not going in to the field solely for the benefit of the world either...most likely they want to help people AND make a very nice living.

So for communism and socialism to work, you require large chunks of the world to become communist first? You know there is something wrong with your idea, if it can only succeed when all alternative ideas are not there to compete with it.
I don't see the point of committing yourself to a political philosophy which has such a unrealistic requirement for success, it seems like a massive waste of time and effort.
I wouldn't call turning the world in to a communist paradise a success...

Yeah, cool, all those people in Appalachia, Africa, India, and every other place ridden with poverty should just stop being so lazy. Makes sense.

Because the capitalist mode of production is contradictory to the socialist mode of production, for one. Another issue I assume would be security reasons. A nation seeking to build socialism should be actively trying to push capitalist nations to revolution. In other words, capitalist hate socialists and socialists hate capitalists.

I guess "nice" is subjective.. by "nice" I meant making a tidy some of money and can live very comfortably.

Sorry, but every single person can not be responsible for every other person on the planet - it doesn't work that way.
The people in africa lived for millennia without the need for your flavor of communism/socialism and other countries carrying them through life...I think they can survive without your imaginary economic system/government.

I still don't see why socialism would prevent them from doing this.

I don't know. I'm not a fortune teller. Human needs like housing, water/food, clothing, health care, transportation, etc. would take precedence above all else. I'm not a car hound, so I don't know how hard a Ferrari is to make. Maybe we'll all be driving electric cars by then.

Was that before or after they were raped by the capitalists of the UK, France, and USA?

So, are you saying that a Doctor would be making the same wages they do now? Or better yet, why don't you explain how socialism would allow them to be well compensated for their work.

It sounds to me like you'd be putting companies like Ferrari out of business. Oh and does that mean that your version of socialism is going to force people to drive vehicles they don't want, such as "electric cars"?

NO wages. How many times do I have to say this? This is why it's currently impossible to debate with you. You don't understand socialism at all.

Probably not going to be "forcing" people into things like that, but since socialism is built on collectivism, I would expect (or hope) that the people would choose not to pollute the environment.

For all the hating on "communism" you guys do (the endless Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, DPRK), I don't think I've ever brought up the savagery done by capitalists. That's because it's a rather weak criticism. Just as weak as your criticisms of 20th century communists.

You said that socialism would offer what I stated, a "tidy some of money and can live very comfortably"....and by "tidy some of money" I meant comfortable compensation for his work....i.e. a wage......so maybe you misinterpreted what I said, but I haven't change my ideas.....so tell me how it's possible for a doctor to be paid and live comfortably without a "wage"?

By your omission I'll assume you accept that your flavor of communism/socialism that you'd be putting companies like Ferrari out of business. Good to know...

Well, how many varieties of cars do you envision in your socialist paradise? I'm thinking 1, which would force people to drive whatever is being produced.

Sorry, but your communist/socialist paradise is just some warped pipe-dream.

You besmirching capitalism by bringing up the sins of it's history, but ignoring the history of communism (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, DPRK) is rather hypocritical, don't you think?

You know, I was thinking about this system and I think it takes an awfully damned narrow view of life....once your needs are met, then what? What about my wants? my dreams? my desires? I get what I "need", but what about what I want?! How does socialism provide for that?
