    A Father's Day call

When my son called on mother's day, we were surprised. We hoped that he would also call on father's day. He didn't disappoint. In fact, he called twice. Once to chat and once to wish me a happy father's day. The first call was on Saturday, the second was on Sunday - Father's Day.

I think it was a sort of "Airplane" sort of thing. "Turn on the runway lights." "No, they'll expect that."

I actually expected a call and I got it. I should have been aware that my son didn't wish me a happy father's day. He did on the second call - on father's day. He was starting his day (Monday) and I was ending mine. With the recent influx of troops, he now does little else but run and watch movies. He's home soon.

Your tales of fatherhood are always interesting, gallo. Makes me look forward to having children of my own.

A man said to the universe:
    "Sir, I exist!"
    "However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
    A sense of obligation."

Thanks. I sincerely hope that when you have children they make you as proud of them as mine have. My shy elder son has become an aggressive intellectual property attorney who works for THE oil field support firm in the world. He has been promoted 3 times in 6 years, from staff attorney to lead attorney to litigation attorney and now, back to patent prosecution - except he now works with the development scientists at MIT. My younger son is a musician (inspired by my elder son) who is in the Army. He is currently in Afghanistan, serving as an infantry squad leader. When he returns to Ft. Riley, he will again become a musician in the home section of the 1st Infantry Division Band.

He told my wife and I about how strange it was, on his deployment, to walk through an airport carrying an assault rifle. He didn't pass through any sort of metal detector. He and his comrades in arms just walked onto plane and stowed their assault rifles under their seats. He'll do the same pretty soon when he returns.
