All studies concerning immigration, both legal and illegal, have shown a very strong and undeniable correlation between high immigration rates and economic growth. While it is true that strong economic growth also attracts immigrants, it is also true that immigrants contribute to economic growth.
Immigrants are primarily of working age adults. We get the economic advantage of a contributing adult with out the economic burden of providing for their education, health, etc. America has a birth rate slightly below replacement. Our economy relies on constant population growth to sustain our boom/bust system.
There is no reason to deport productive members of society. I would have no problem with penalizing illegal immigrants (for instance, a large fine, required community service, required military service, or an increased tax rate) for entering illegally. However, if they are shown to be contributing members of society, we would be stupid to deport them.

I completley agree with Dieval on this. First you are not an upstanding citizen if you are an illegal federal trespasser, you are in fact a felon. Felons go to prison, serve time, pay for their court fees and jail time. They are expected not to break the laws again but in an Illegal aliens case, they are never not breaking the law. Good or bad is really not the point, it's that they are NOT citizens, they are NOT entitled to jobs or benefits and they do NOT have a right to stay. In addition to this there is a climbing unemployment rate for the legal citizens of this nation a great majority of which is caused by illegals stealing our jobs, and NAFTA which causes our jobs to be sent over seas to other countries' citizens leaving our own people in the dust. So why then would we allow illegal aliens to have work permits to stay here and consume more and more of OUR people's jobs? There is no reason any country would do that unless it was to use those people as cheap psuedo slave labor and to diminish wages and benefits that the LEGAL citizens expect and are entitled to , and to use the latino vote for the Democratic politicians.
Saving the empovershed by empoverishing their counterparts will empoverish the whole.
