Food production is altered a lot by subsidization. Fruits and certain vegetables get less subsidization than other sectors. It's another issue where nearly all of us "have blood on our hands." I want to blame THEM, but I often enough still buy their junk. Still, I'm trying to cut down. It's harder than it sounds. Putting aside the whole "addictive foods from advertising giants" angle, old habits die hard.

I can't remember what the stuff is called, but it is sugar made from corn, very cheap and switching off the 'I've-had-enough' reflex, and they put it in nearly everything, so we shouldn't take on too much guilt.

The article said we were on average three stone heavier than in the 'sixties. I was there, and I'm not,
I was there too, and I still am. In fact, right now I'm about 3.5 stone (50 lbs) heaver than I was in the 60s. That's down from 5.3 stone (75 lbs) heavier than I was in the 60s.

It's called "high fructose corn syrup."

Thanks - you are right: I remember now. Keep at it, as shall I - I am heavier than i should be, whatever.

It is in a lot, so it's difficult to take it off the old list. That being said, I think the effects of such things may be slightly exaggerated. And, really, if we had more will power none of these things would impact us nearly as much.

I am going to suggest something: Don't think of it as "heavier" or "lighter," but as "healthier" and "unhealthier." I've found it easier to cut down on junk food when I think of it as unhealthy. It cuts more to the point. I have a rocky history as far as this goes, but I've cut down at least slightly. I've also started shopping at more than one grocery store, even if only for variety's sake. I can get some healthier stuff from a local co-op.

...anymore. I am now merely overweight after losing 25 lbs. I was so big that I couldn't get out of my own way. I now usually walk 3 miles a day. Before I walked from the living room to the refrigerator. When I started walking again, I had to stop 3 or 4 times in a mile because of pain in my hips and legs because of my back (3 fusions in two surgeries). Now I don't stop and rarely have pain. Stronger back and less load out front to carry.

I'm half way there after only 11 weeks. But progress is slower as time goes on.
We must wonder what, exactly, is the point your are trying to make?

Are you some sort of idiot? This is the general discussion forum, i.e., not a debate forum. I am mostly talking to my many friends who I have come to know on this board over several years. I don't have a "point" to make, but maybe my success will encourage someone else who has a weight problem to make an effort. It takes effort - I have been at it for over three months and have now lost 25 lbs. It is a slow process that requires reduced caloric intake and increased exercise. But that's not a secret, is it?

But, of course, you, a new comer, don't know me or any of the people who have been here for several years - the people who I respect and who have some respect for me, to whom I was addressing my message. You have yet to earn my respect. To date, your posts seem quite trivial and not worthy of respect.

Why be a prick when you don't have to? The better question is what, exactly, is the point you are trying to make?

Right my posts are trivial. Like anyone's posts on this website are world changing posts.

Indeed. But as far as I have seen so far, yours fall below par. You have to start thinking before you post.

So why is it that you wish to make my posts about my weight loss a topic of discussion? Do you have some evidence that I haven't lost 25 lbs.? Do you doubt it? You have only my word.

Why do you wish to turn this general discussion board into some sort of debate, while you avoid the debate boards. Do you have a point?

Just remember, these are basically static pages. That's how I get by when people piss me off here. I get less annoyed by putting things in perspective.

I ask you to please find my reply below par, too, so you can test this theory.

Wrong. A lot of the posts on this site are in fact trivial. Do you want examples? My posts do not fall far below par. In fact a lot of times people just provide their opinions. We have atheists in the religion forum arguing that theists believe in an imaginary unicorn. I mean that's actually their argument. Your statement is bullshit and the evidence does not support your nonsensical conclusion.
