i hope they re vote, but i doubt that they will. I don't understand how a country with no football background, a shitty team, and strict laws (idiot laws) can win this. It's all rigged. But in the meanwhile, the Brazil WC is gonna rock! and the Russia WC too.

We Americans have got it wrong from day one. See, we play football with our hands and then we call the game which is really played with the feet "soccer". I never quite understood why.
More useless knowledge I found online: the first soccer (er, football) organization in the US was called the US Soccer Football Association. Apparently the Americans couldn't decide whether to adopt the English aristocratic name soccer over the name preferred by the working classes, Association Football or just football. So they compromised: Soccer Football. By the time Soccer Football arrived in America--and in Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa--the name football applied to other sports (American and Canadian football, Aussie "footie," Irish Gaelic football, etc).

So the name soccer was resurrected from its British aristocratic roots. Ironically, a nation that rebelled against British aristocracy and royalty, America, is just about the only nation that still uses the word soccer. There must be some perverse rebel reason for that name choice now, although when I was in Australia many people still used soccer for football as not to confuse the game with their beloved Aussie Rules footie. But Aussies have their own problems with the Brits, the "Poms."

As for the true "foot" game, I think world critics of American football miss the point. Early games called "football" referred to playing the game "on foot" as opposed to the aristocratic preference to play on horseback or "by foot" as in modern football/soccer. Early American football did not allow the forward pass and, like rugby, relied exclusively on advancing the ball on foot or by field goal kick.

So why does the US still cling to a now discarded or underused "soccer" name when the rest of the world has moved on? Because we can! We don't use the metric system either. And we as a nation just love American football more, even more than our official national past time, a proletarian game also played on foot called baseball.

So says the internets, and we all know they are never, ever in error.

I do like kicking things sometimes, and I remember I would kick a soccer ball at times. It would rock. That's about all I have to add.

Well, spain have won all three of the tournaments they have been in over the last four years, so they should be labelled the best at the moment.

That would be in the last 12 years there Chars, also they are being touted as the best team ever. A dream match would be Spain now vs Brazil of 1970.

Spain would win. the brazil i saw on tv was terribly slow and lacked modern day tactical know how and discipline. mentally the spainiards have the edge, and the skills have been honed from a young age.

    Brazil of 1970 doesn't stand a chance!

I agree, although it would be one hell of a match. You have to remember that Brazil of 1970 had the greatest player to ever grace the game(Pele) and they also did hold the record for the largest win in any final until this year when they humped Italy 4-1 in the final.

Which makes me feel kinda sorry for Italy, they played well in the tournament, I never saw them getting past the Germans to be honest, but they did dig deep and they did their country proud. And oh just to let everyone know apart from the goal that Italy scored against Spain in their 1-1 draw, the last person to scpre against Spain was David Goodwillie of Scotland. That obviously makes us the best team on the world bar Spain. (Total grasping at straws here, but it is all we Scots have).

Chars is actually correct. Spain has won the last two Euros 2008 & 2012 and won the World Cup in 2010.

That is 3 major titles in the last 4 years.
