The hero worship evident in the OP (and I was as guilty of this sort of thing at 16 as were most of my peers) and the current attempts by many Americans of both political parties to elevate our troops into living saints are both unreasonable and unnecessary.
Soldiers are as human as anyone else. They don't have superhuman powers that allow them to avoid fear, perform miracles or live error-free lives.
