I know how to collect dust with a guitar....one of these days I will devote a half hour a day to it.
My dad played sax and I tried to in elementary school but never applied myself... I would do well to just "get by' for a litte fun, i dont have talent.

My dad had a C Melody sax.... he was always transposing piano music for it... I dont know why he was always doing that, I thought C key sheet music was plentiful....
He played songs solo at parties like Caravan, Shadow of Your Smile, Love Potion #9, Boots Randolph and Herb Alpert stuff.

Whenever Im in central park, I always tip the horn guys to play a little of that stuff and relax to listen on a bench---its cool.

Any tips for a budding musician like me? How to get motivated? Im a deadhead/blues guy
I'm not sure how much talent has to do with playing. A lot of it is motivation and patience. Playing sax you have to pretty much face the fact that it is going to sound horrible for a while before it gets better. Totally worth it once you get there though. Definitely give it another shot. I'd recommend everyone on this forum give playing an instrument a shot. Few hobbies can be more rewarding.

I have a C Melody too! He shouldn't have had to transpose piano music for it though, both are in the Key of C. C Melodies were designed specifically for reading piano music and vocal music. Too bad the Great Depression killed the horn.

I'm sorry, but I'd agree with you if you were right.

Too bad the Great Depression killed the horn.
We may have to melt them down to make brass shells for ammunition this time around! (hope not... Obama will shepherd us through these unsure economic times before revolution becomes a viable option (ahem) )

Anyway, back to music buescherman, maybe my dad was transposing some other sheet music... shows you what I know!

What do you think of the harmonica? Is that a simple thing to get a little entertainment out of without a lot of dedication or is it more complicated than it seems?

My realistic goal in making music would be campfire stuff, I'd just like to be able to find a short cut to at least contribute a little entertainment at get togethers.

i have a behringer strat copy and an awesome tiny 9volt powered amp that really sounds great and puts out alot of sound. I also have a cheap spanish guitar that I bought because I thought the wider neck would facilitate playing chords cleanly with my fat fingers

With all the horn talk it made me think of the Eurythmics song “Would I lie to you” and the great horn section in a bluesy pop sound. I always loved Annie’s pure and powerful voice and her looks aren’t bad either.

Also commonsense some great harmonica work in missionary man.

Just out of curiosity grandpa, what instrument do you play? Obviously by my avatar, I play sax.
I mostly play guitar and bass.

    Gary Moore….should I say any…moore?

YouTube - Gary Moore - Still Got The Blues (Live)

Gary moore is so technically pure….just plain brilliant.

YouTube - BB King / Gary Moore - The Thrill is Gone

…. let’s just say I would have paid “a lot” to sit in on this. B.B. and Moore, could it get much better?

YouTube - Music Video - Gary Moore - The Loner

YouTube - Gary Moore Empty Rooms Live 1987 His Best Guitar Solo

No one better at making a guitar cry IMHO.
