France has refused to grant citizenship to a burqa-wearing Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" interpretation of Islam is incompatible with its values.
The legal ruling, which has just been published, is the first time a Muslim applicant had been rejected by France due to their religious practices.

She wears a black burqa that covers all her body except her eyes, which are visible through a narrow slit, and lives in "total submission" to her husband and male relatives, according to reports by social services.

"She has adopted a radical practice of her religion, incompatible with essential values of the French community, particularly the principle of equality of the sexes," said a ruling by the Council of State seen by Le Monde newspaper.

I understand where you’re coming from, I just think it’s a bad analogy. Consensual BDSM involves role playing and to be honest is all a bit silly rather than sinister, but as this is totally off topic, I’ll leave it there.

The question is: How high do you set the bar for citizenship of your country, a place that has things going for it that you'd kinda like to preserve?

I'm simply asking for consistency, something that is sorely lagging in matters of immigration and citizenship.

Consider that, to become a citizen of the USA, you must pass a test on American history. Why do people born here get to be citizens without passing this test?

Because they are by birth citizens, you can't just deport someone's child for not knowing who Jefferson Davis was. The double standard is due to the fact that people want their children to be protected as citizens no matter what, but prefer to be more choosy about the new blood they let in, a perfetly understandable concept.
