    Electronic Music

Did you know it isn't all TECHNO?

Why is it so unpopular in the USA while thriving everywhere else?

What are you favorite subgenres, tracks, or artists?

    What defines electronic music?

Do you like electronic music? Why?!

Do you hate electronic music? Why?!

If you have something to say about electronic music, say it here.

    Powerful.. magical.. e-e-e-eevil..

I like electronic music in limited doses, mostly dance music without lyrics. ( and I don't dance )

Overall my taste is biased towards strings. I like guitars, cellos, violins, and stringed instruments far above other forms of music, and it shows in my music collection.

    You should check out brainbug.

He uses a lot of dark strings and orchestras in his tracks.

I usually prefer no lyrics either.. but check this song out..

I like trance or techno but mostly limited to vocal songs.

I think techno is associated with a more hip or queer crowd in the US and hence it isn't as popular. Much of the popular music is rap or country which sells sex better than techno.

So I'd say its all about sex appeal. In the US techno is to gay.

Paul Van Dyk is a favorite for that style of techno, Rammstein for the heavier style.

    Arghghgghgh!

    PVD is NOT techno.

Techno is what people who aren't accustomed to EDM use to refer to the entire genre.

Techno is a raw, souless subgenre in electronic music.

This is an interactive guide with samples that will teach you all the genres of electronic music.

Note: Ishkur, the maker of the guide, is EXTREMELY biased. He has strong opinions about each genre, so keep that in mind.

i always hated that everyone thought "techno" was some all-encompassing word for electronic music...

i'm almost 28 now, and have been listening to electronically created music for roughly 20 years now.. the early years began with groups like depeche mode and nin (including all the nothing records industrial groups). when i was 13, i was introduced to my first "true" electronic tunes. namely: prodigy, juno reactor, eskimos & egypt, fsol, the orb, etc... went to my first rave when i was 16 and didn't stop partying until i was 25.

i think it never caught on in the u.s. because it was so well-kept to the underground (until recent years that is). you hear the music everywhere and most don't even realize it - commercials, movies, everything...

my favorite sub-genres are psytrance (german, not israeli) and techno (ny style - john selway style)... i also have a sweet spot for some jungle and breaks every now and then.. progressive house when i'm tired (parks & wilson style)..

there's something about this music that's far more creative than traditional styles imo. and for one, i HATE lyrics and to a lesser degree, guitars. the repetition of the beat creates this nice hypnotic effect, leaving you open to get mesmerized by the high/mid notes.

used to own some technics but traded them in for some hardware a few years ago. got myself a 303, fizmo and jx-305 to play with. haven't had the energy to play with them in a while, but i think about them all the time.

    hope for america...

I actually compose electronic music. I've grown quite proficient at FLStudio over the years. I suppose I could post some if anyone was interested. I tend to compose more piano based somewhat theatrical sounding things.

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

If you want to hear some early electronic music, check out Poeme Electronique by Edgard Varese. It's pretty freaky.

I listen to it if it's on, but I've never really been motivated to buy a lot of it. The only albums I own are The Irreversible soundtrack by Thomas Bangalter, and something by Jean Michelle Jarre which I forget the name of.

None of them are a patch on the genius that is Tek Nectar of course.
