I don't think that the Japanese were happy that we were there after WWII, maybe most of the germans, (although there was a small insurgency).
The Germans were not happy.... they were defeated, their city laid in rubble, their leader killed himself, and was now occupied by allies from all sides.

They then learned more about what Hitler was doing with concentration camps, citizens were forced to bury the bodies of the dead in the camps, etc..... I don't think they were too cheerful.

The insurgency that was in Germany was the short stint of battle between a select few SS troops who were still loyal to Hitler and a handful of Hitler Youth. They held off the allies long enough for Hitler, his wife and his dog to kill themselves and burn their bodies, because they knew very well what would happen if he or anybody in relation to him was captured.

And for Japan..... they got nuked twice.... in two cities which were mostly civilians. They were defeated, and they had to deal with a lot of reconstruction, radiation complications, uninhabitable areas, among many things......

Would you be happy if the US was defeated and occupied by Iran, Korea, Russia, or China? Sure you're pissed at your government and their decisions, but would you rather be under their rule, where you have some value, or under the boots of another country who just defeated you?

There still wasn't an insurgency like we have seen in Iraq, that's my point, and I was being very generous with "most germans".

The trouble is, the wars aren't comparable in the slightest. Germany & Japan had gone through an immense military build-up, and for 2 solid years had seen pretty much everything go their way. It then took a further 4 to grind them down - and this with increased pressure, massive bombing on their homelands, etc, etc, etc.

The 'Coalition' took Iraq away from Saddam in days. Barely enough time to register the shock. Of course, such a speedy victory leads to expectations about peacetime achievements. The ineptitude of the aftermath has lead to rapid disillusionment and all sorts.

How are you going to grind down the spirit of the Iranians without making the entire country a refugee camp? Hell, even that probably won't work - look at the Palestinians, look at the Afghans, who fought Soviet troops who weren't nearly as...considerant (if that's even a word)...of world opinion as the US and potential allies will be?

Exactly, the point I was trying to make.

I'd have to say against. I'm not against war, but "threating our way of life" is speculative.

Iran will develop nuclear capabilitity no matter what the US does, short of bombing and invasions. However, it will probably be Israel that will perform the dirty work in this situation. The US needs to get out of the Middle East entirely.

Meanwhile, the prospect of someone detonating a small tactical nuclear weapon against the US is very real, no doubt because of our apparent inability to withdraw from the Middle East and emphasize modest security measures in America.

If Israel does..... they'll have plenty of countries there to take them out.... all they're waiting for is one good excuse to attack them.

Of course this has the potential to trigger a regional war, but Israel, if they feel threatened and take Iran's posturing seriously, will probabbly feel as though they have no choice and will attack. They have proved in the past they have no compunction about going to war when they feel their national security is threatened. The US needs to stay out of it. The US needs to fully disengage from the Middle East entirely. Unfortunately, both the Dems and the Repugs don't have the will and lack the desire to entirely remove all US influence and forces from the Middle East.

The real power of owning a nuclear weapon is the threat of using it
