He was filming a documentary at the time, probably trying to show how "friendly" these creatures were.

i guess his luck finally ran out.
To say the least. Struck through the heart by a stingray? What are the odds of that? Stingray hits are fairly common here in San Diego, but folks usually step on them and get whacked in the ankle. Of all the spots on Irwin's big bod, it hit his heart.

I used to think Irwin was a bit of a joke until I was watching TV one day and saw this chunky blonde guy ripping some overhead surf. I did a double take, cuz he was wearing Irwin's trademark boots, khaki safari shorts and shirt... while surfing! I thought, damn, that looks just like Steve Irwin, but this has to be some sort of put on, cuz this guy was absolutely shredding the large wave!

Damn if it wasn't him! Good on ya, mate.

Stingrays are gentle creatures. I am taking my daughter to pet some at the Opry mills mall.

I think S. Irwin was careless, since a stingray is not a hostile creature.
Nevertheless, that is a sad news Steve is gone.

He played at the benefit of the odds his training and education gave him.

It was only time until those odds shifted out of his favor, simply by his constant playing against them.

I feel for him and his family. He did a good job at what he did, risky or not.

He bugged the crap out of me, his "humour" was rubbish, his show was crap but he was a superb conservationist and a deeply passionate man who cared immensely about what he did. He probably did more for Aussie conservation and species preservation than the rest of the Zoology/Ecology community put together. A tireless worker, if a pain in the arse. At least he went doing what he loved. Small consolation for his wife and two young kids I know.

It was a freak accident. Stingrays hardly ever do any real damage. Just got him in the heart.

I liked this guy. He had a real enthusiasm for life. Everything was amazing to him. Wish I could be like that.

Lots of people will miss him dearly. I know I will.

There are a few things that you tend to rely on in the world. Things that you can depend on being there forever, that have been so ingrained into your conception of reality that you're shocked when it's gone.
The Crocodile Hunter is one of them.

Steve Irwin should have worn some sunscreen to protect him from those harmful rays!!

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
Or get married and wish you were dead.
