Doesn't the US public feel slightly bothered that they have billions of dollars (I assume) going to a project to create the world's fastest aircraft, when the same money could go to something more meaningful?

Fastest aircraft=key element in air dominance=dominance in battle=keeping America safe

Besides, I don't care for a lot of the programs that you would consider "meaningful".

This is laughable, are there any countries (which will pose a threat within decades) that aren't totally p4wned by the US miltary? Are there any country stupid enough to attack the US in the first place? But maybe having the knowledge you can bomb anywhere in the world within a couple of hours makes your "crown jewels" feel safer huh?

Hey man, you got a problem with Maximum Overkill? (sarcasm)

In response to your earlier post, it costs way too much, and the costs are undermining the foundations of the republic.

It doesn't cost way to much...hmmm...I think that is getting into debating values. I never much thought you can debate values.

No one will attack us because we continue in the need for air dominance and other ways to make our military number one. Other countries can/will catch up.

I don't think it was a PR stunt, but there are a lot of problems to be worked out beside the engine itself. Drag is a big problem, as those little air molecules can smack into a plane at M5 and create a lot of heat, and the engine burns super hot as well. On the plus side, the cops would never come close to catching the old Taurus, but on the negative side, the Taurus would melt causing a problem with its resale value.

Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots.

Bah, who needs a transmission when you've got a scram-jet engine? Hell, who needs wheels?

If they were developing this for the military it would bother me. They probably did, so it probably does.

Aurora - Secret Hypersonic Spyplane

Does the United States Air Force or one of America's intelligence agencies have a secret hypersonic aircraft capable of a Mach 6 performance?

---

Yes it does as of March 27th of this year.
the X-43a (scrammed) successfully completed a test mission (UAV) @ ~M7
(5k mph) for 11 sec before landing into the ocean.

A HUGE success for hypersonic research at Dryden.

I thought Aurora is to do with gas propulsion based technology for use in surface to air missiles or evading them.

I have to look into it, to be a hypersonic propulsed craft, it most likely needs to be scrammed. it seems it was rumored to replace the A-12/SR-71.
