    Higgs boson

It appears that they have actually observed this elusive particle that was predicted by particle physics theory. Wow!

From what little I have read, it seems to have been detected twice, from the collisions of two protons, at the CERN high energy collider.

Until now, the Higgs Boson has been the hypothetical particle that gave mass to matter.

This observation has significant conformational impact on the big bang theory.

The way i think of it all mater has mass because it has it inherently, not because of some particle giving the atom mass.

But you aren't a physicist, are you?

Any have a quick place to look for how the Higgs does this mass endowment? Probably too much to hope that it would be pithy as well as concise.

If the terrain and the map do not agree, follow the terrain.

You can rarely apply either adjective to the mathematics of quantum mechanics.

Correction: They have observed a particle whose rest-mass is about what they expect for a Higgs boson, but which may or may not be the actual Higgs. Efforts are ongoing to finally prove whether it is indeed the Higgs or a brand new particle. They're an inch away from having proven the existence of the Higgs, however, and if I were a betting man I'd put some serious odds towards its existence being confirmed within the next year.

A man said to the universe:
    "Sir, I exist!"
    "However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
    A sense of obligation."

And what will they get when they smash the Higgs boson into little pieces?

I read a few months ago that it was likely they had detected it but not within the margin of error required to claim a discovery. I read the bit they had in the New York Times on it--from what I remember (though the article wasn't all that clear) the probability of its existence had risen again. I can't remember if they can actually claim to have discovered it yet or not.

Well, since it decays after only a tiny fraction of a second, we probably won't find out for a while

I probably should have mentioned that one of the particle physicists involved in the tests stated that he was 99.9% sure that these were observations of the Higgs boson. He knows more than I do. The rest-mass wasn't "about" what they expect, it was almost exactly what they expect, i.e., within the observational error bars. I didn't read any article that stated any evidence against this as being the Higgs boson. In fact, I didn't even see any article to the contrary.

But, of course, this is science, and the affirmation will be tested again. I suspect it will be confirmed.
