    Homophobes and homosexual arousal

A new study has reignited this topic (previous studies with similar results have been conducted) suggesting that "homophobia is more pronounced in individuals with an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex and who grew up with authoritarian parents who forbade such desires" -

    Is some homophobia self-phobia?

The study is the first to document the role that both parenting and sexual orientation play in the formation of intense and visceral fear of homosexuals, including self-reported homophobic attitudes, discriminatory bias, implicit hostility towards gays, and endorsement of anti-gay policies. Conducted by a team from the University of Rochester, the University of Essex, England, and the University of California in Santa Barbara, the research will be published the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

"Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves," explains Netta Weinstein, a lecturer at the University of Essex and the study's lead author.

"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," adds co-author Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester who helped direct the research.

The paper includes four separate experiments, conducted in the United States and Germany, with each study involving an average of 160 college students. The findings provide new empirical evidence to support the psychoanalytic theory that the fear, anxiety, and aversion that some seemingly heterosexual people hold toward gays and lesbians can grow out of their own repressed same-sex desires, Ryan says. The results also support the more modern self-determination theory, developed by Ryan and Edward Deci at the University of Rochester, which links controlling parenting to poorer self-acceptance and difficulty valuing oneself unconditionally.

The findings may help to explain the personal dynamics behind some bullying and hate crimes directed at gays and lesbians, the authors argue. Media coverage of gay-related hate crimes suggests that attackers often perceive some level of threat from homosexuals. People in denial about their sexual orientation may lash out because gay targets threaten and bring this internal conflict to the forefront, the authors write.

The research also sheds light on high profile cases in which anti-gay public figures are caught engaging in same-sex sexual acts. The authors cite such examples as Ted Haggard, the evangelical preacher who opposed gay marriage but was exposed in a gay sex scandal in 2006, and Glenn Murphy, Jr., former chairman of the Young Republican National Federation and vocal opponent of gay marriage, who was accused of sexually assaulting a 22-year-old man in 2007, as potentially reflecting this dynamic.

"We laugh at or make fun of such blatant hypocrisy, but in a real way, these people may often themselves be victims of repression and experience exaggerated feelings of threat," says Ryan. "Homophobia is not a laughing matter. It can sometimes have tragic consequences," Ryan says, pointing to cases such as the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard or the 2011 shooting of Larry King.

I assume there's a relatively larger risk under those circumstances, sure. If that were me, I'd go out of my way to prove I'm not a wicked homosexual.

A lot of talk there but I see no specifics as to how this "study" was conducted or what the controls were? Personally, I find male homosex to be disgusting but homosexuals seem just like every other person to me, I have always gotten along with them just fine. I don't espouse hatred for them or what they do with their genitals but I find the actual act of two men kissing (for example) to be quite disturbing and gross. I truly avert my eyes as if someone was vomiting and I wish not to see that.

I know this sort of honesty is typically met with the label of homophobic, but I feel that is just a defense mechanism utilized by those whom were offended by my honesty. I assure you, I harbor no repressed homosexual desires or sexual confusion.

More honesty; I find the imagery of two attractive women kissing to be quite erotic. However, two "butch" women kissing is not a turn on to me, not disgusting like the imagery of two men, but certainly not a site that arouses me.

“Nothing optional—from homosexuality to adultery—is ever made punishable unless those who do the prohibiting (and exact the fierce punishments) have a repressed desire to participate. As Shakespeare put it in King Lear, the policeman who lashes the whore has a hot need to use her for the very offense for which he plies the lash.” -The Hitch

Much as I like the Hitch clearly isn't true. My Nan finds the idea of two men getting it on to be quite disagreeable and it's obviously not because she wishes to participate. You know, what with not being a man and all. Also fairly sure the media companies seeking to introduce harsh penalties for pirates don't want more copyright abuse. Maybe I've misunderstood the word "optional" here, but anyway:

In some instances the desire to opress comes from a desire to repress in oneself.

    Homo (same) phobos (fear).

Always thought this made up word was bunk.

As if the only reason to have any reservation concerning homosexuality was solely based on fear.

Pure hubris to create a term that does not mean what it says and infers a lie.

Man is an animal. Sexual stimulation is a pleasure. Knowing that a human mouth upon one'e genitalia would be pleasurable without regard to the sex of the bearer of the mouth does not negate the impropriety of the act.

The human mouth would be as pleasurable if the bearer was 10. Does that make it OK for the 40 year old to invited the neighbors daughter over for "play" time?

Does the mouth need to be human? Should we as a society have no qualms about bestiality?

Does the mouth have to be willing? Rape has been found to stimulate people who would never commit the act. Are we being stodgy about permission?

The fact that a person is stimulated to commit an act does not grant acceptability of the act.

The person engaging in a sexual act may do so against hi judgement and knowledge. The adulterer knows his act is wrong, even according to his standards, but the allure and desire for self satisfaction outweigh the impetus not to act incorrectly.

    Desire does not equal acceptability.

why do you resort to extremes so often? Who said that the ONLY reason to have reservations was fear? and its not inferring anything. its a word. it has a meaning because of the way its used. It means irrational fear of homosexuals, and considering what it describes, its a fairly accurate word. What your beef with the damn word is I have no idea.

Can you demonstrate that homsexual sex is an improprietous act? And i dont mean a damn bible quote either.

Also, I love how you homophobes always go to these examples when it comes to gays. Pedophelia, bestiality, and rape. As if those things compare to two consenting adults engaging in perfectly legal sexual acts that you simply disagree with.

Key words there: CONSENTING ADULTS. No one is proposing pedophelia. No one is proposing bestiality. No one is proposing rape. and unless you can actually show where these things stem from homosexuality, you really need to stop beating a dead horse.

The fact that a person is stimulated to commit an act does not grant acceptability of the act.

I find it interesting that you use adultery as your example here. Adultery is not illegal, and is actually practiced by some couples voluntarily. Its called swinging. Who are you to denounce what willing adults do in their private spaces? And who are you to tell them that their behavior is incorrect?

How dare you impose your morality on others who are not doing anything to violate the rights of another person.

Except that reads as logic salad to people like me. It's wrong, but it does not harm anyone? Uh... huh.

And then you say we need to accept this arbitrary rule to continue to accept these other non-arbitrary rules?

Why? Why the garbled, incomprehensible logic? Some of the typical nonsense is caused by believers never thinking about what is and isn't an arbitrary rule and I understand that. Yet... there's something more here...

The more you complain, the less I care about your problems.

Which rule do I suggest "we need to accept"? That we not invent words that improperly use wood roots?

It is a made up word, all words are made up. And if that is the extent of your ability to define homos or phobia then i would suggest that the bunk belongs more with your level of education.
Not only do you limit the meanings of the words to a level of nonsense but completely ignore that the symptoms and experiences are caused by the irrational thinking not on the result of the thinking.
The pure hubris is your making judgement on false information.

    Desire does not equal acceptability.
Nor does a disgust equal that something is not acceptable.

I have long suspected that the most vocal opponents of what they call the "homosexual lifestyle" are themselves either gay or afraid that they're gay.

But truth, Hajjaj was convinced, held many layers.

I'll second the dislike of the term "homophobia".

A phobia is specifically a fear. Not just a "dislike" or "aversion"... but an irrational fear.

I think there is very little fear with most "homophobes". It is just bigotry. Perhaps there is some underlying loathing of the self.... but phobia to me seems like an inaccurate and loaded term.

    Serious as a heart attack...

    ...and twice as deadly.
