ok well i think most of us who follow NASA and space flight in general are aware that after the crash of the Space Ship Columbia NASA has been somewhat inactive in their progress towards more space flights and new space technologies...

This my friends is finally a sign of hope from the space industry... As most of you know it is getting to the point where private businesses outside of NASA have been vying to become the first people to create commercial space ships that would bring regular citizens up to space (ofcourse for a hefty price). However still this seems to be a step in the right direction for NASA and for the space community so go read the article and post your thoughts here.

*dont worry guys its short :)

i'm going to drive one of those when i grow up as my job.

it would be exciting and dull at the same time.

maybe I'll just stick to programming on Earth, its also exciting and dull, and theres much less risk.

Space exploration is over funded and more money should go towards sorting out other earthly problems.

If all that money went towards funding time travel research so GW Bush never happened then that would be a different matter.

Time Travel, dude you have to be kidding me. Whatever happened to the basic human instinct of curiosity, who doesn’t want to know what lies beyond our tiny insignificant dot in the universe? I think the Columbia incident should not deter future space travel; we have learned from that incident and from now on will take the necessary precautions in order to keep that from happening again. As for space travel in the private sector I really think that it’s not a good idea without being regulated by the government as far as safety goes I think it’s a recipe for disaster.

In the words of Albert Einstein
"The Fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science"

i think we dont put enough money into space explorationa and NASA or any other space programs in general. The truth of the matter is the ONLY logical chance we have of surviving as a culture/race whatever is to populate other planets. Our risk of going extinct on one planet is to great. I dont know about you guys but i sure dont want our race to go extinct. do you?

As am I.

The current state of world affairs is such that we are running out of resources, Oil, and fossil fuels is going to be the first, and while organic in nature, exploitation is going to limit our growth as a species - Mars is going to take about 400 years to Terraform based on NASA's estimates by filling the atmosphere with CO2 to cause a greenhouse effect, being able to start these programs ASAP is really just something that has to be done. Worldly conflicts are eternal, I'm suprised people havnt realised this yet.

Unfortunately thats all i do... Any time im ever thinking about something it always seems to be technology or space or something from the future... i have aproblem living in the real time sometimes... i know it must sound a bit ridicilous but its true. i almost feel like i was meant to be born in the future instead of now.

How about all the funding we spend on weapons that will almost certainly never be used be put into good use for social services such as health and Education. I wonder how tax money was wasted when US had the arms race with USSR.

It also spawned a lot of technology, the net probably wouldn't exist in the form it is today without the Cold war. But wtf do you guys still keep around 3000 Nukes each? I mean serious, the kind of firepower is decimating a whole planet../

Actually that also is a logical fallicy and an urban myth. The claim that the nuclear arsenal would kill humanity 6 times over, was assuming that every bomb was droped in a densly populated city, which would simply result in many people being killed several thousand times over. Ridiculous...

With current missile technology, its not far fetched. I'm guessing that the average yield of the warheads are around 1 megatonne btw.
If spread over at equal distances, even if the initial blast doesn't effect us we'd still have to deal with the radiation and then the nuclear fallout, there will be a hell of a lot of radioactive isotopes in the air and circulating around the atmosphere even decades after.

you cant possibly say that the US does not have the power... all by its self to destroy the planet. I believe that it definitly has this power and definitly should not.

Er, that was badly stated. It sounds like you are stating that you have the right to decide something about someone else and then demand they change? What if the conclusion is totally due to ignorance on your part, does that mean that your ignorance is what gives you the right to make them change?

BTW: I can say whatever I wish, even if I fail to back it with facts. But, if you wish, I can show you the math.
