Man Flu the Real Thing

Quote:
Women 'fight off disease better'
BBC NEWS | Health | Women 'fight off disease better'
Quote:
Men really do have an excuse for supposedly being wimpy about coughs and colds - their immune systems are not as strong as women's, research suggests.
Quote:
Dr Leslie Knapp, of the University of Cambridge, said there was a substantial body of evidence to show that women were better at fighting infections than men.

She said: "Women are well known to be able to respond more robustly to infections, and to recover more quickly than men.

"In evolutionary terms it only takes one male to reproduce with lots of females, but females are much more important in terms of producing offspring."

The researchers believe women may have evolved a more robust immune system because of their key role in producing and nurturing young.
I can't afford to be sick...the world would stop.

Well it would help if they stopped whining and went to the doctor more often or took the medicine they were given.... Maybe they just like us nurturing them as it makes them feel young again?

Tougher and more dominant - maybe - but that doesn't make women nicer people, necessarily - but I can only dare say that because I'm safely beyond throwing distance...

Who is stronger, the person who can fight off the flu or the person who can get almost always persuade the person who can fight off the flu to take care of them?

Act that your principle of action might safely be made a law for the whole world.

All of this "women are better than men" tripe isn't humorous in the least. And it is being propagated with insulting remarks from a moderator.

Listen up! An obvious explanation could be that a gene involved in the immune reaction to certain pathogens might be on the X chromosome. Women have two, men have one.

Yet another obvious thought is that our ancestors were hunter-gatherers. Men spent more time away from the base camp on extended hunting expeditions, sleeping in the open, where they were less exposed to diseases that are more frequently propagated in close confines, like the tents that the women maintained. Thus, a pathogen could run it's course in the village while the men were gone. As a result, women tend to have a greater resistance. It's still on the X chromosome.

So ancient men went out and risked their lives hunting huge animals in order to support their wives and children, while women went out and picked nuts and berries.

Ah! I see the light! Why should I risk my life in search of big, dangerous game instead of picking nuts and berries?

I concede the point. The men were whipped.

Can't help but feel if they did the survey in Scotland or Tibet they would come up with a different set of results.

Very young. It's that wife=mommie thing most men never overcome. Why else do men faux-suckle during sex? It's a reversion to childhood. We want to be mommied.

Yes, it actually does have its light side. My manhood isn't challenged much by considering the possibility that when it comes to resisting illness women are "better" than men. That's evolution for you. All these centuries of creating societies where the guys are in charge and religions where the guys are in charge, and here we find out nature favors the "weaker" sex. Next; guys whining about having been accused of whining.

Ha ha! Such a response to my light-hearted post I did not expect.

Listen up! For a given value of "better", women are better than men. In this instance, it's the immune system that is better, as stated in the article, ergo: women are better than men when it comes to immune systems.

Luckily for you guys, unlike some other boards I frequent, mods at Volconvo aren't forced to hand in their sense of humour at the door before they start work ...

Jarred Diamond and other biologists are pretty keen to disabuse us of our popular notions of ancient hunter-gathering practices. Pointing to his experience of 'primitive' surviving populations in New Guinea and parts if Africa, he insists that 'big game' rarely, if ever, involves anything bigger than a wild pig, and even finding birds' nests causes quite a lot of excitement on a hunting expedition. Scavenging on the kills of larger predators seems to have been the order of the day for early homo-sapiens.

Reading his book was quite an eye-opener in this regard.

Err... What have I done wrong?

Did I say a joke of yours was off topic? I did say that I couldn't wait for an example of your humour, but that was a different thing..

ps. My attribution to gallo appears to be correct, as far as I can see, Cruella.

A sick male does seem to bring out the nurturing side of many women. On the other hand, so does a perfectly healthy newborn baby.

So does this mean I should be more, or less sympathetic when my SO is snivelling in bed for days with a cold?

As mentioned above, I'd love to see if these statistics change when different populations are sampled.
