According to this week's issue of The Lancet medical journal, the German doctors used a mesh cage, a growth chemical and the patient's own bone marrow, containing stem cells, to create a new jaw bone that fit exactly into the gap left by the cancer surgery. Tests have not been done yet to verify whether the bone was created by the blank-slate stem cells and it is too early to tell whether the jaw will function normally in the long term. But the operation is the first published report of a whole bone being engineered and incubated inside a patient's body and transplanted. Stem cells are the master cells of the body that go on to become every tissue in the body. They are a hot area of research with scientists trying to find ways to prompt them to make desired tissues, and perhaps organs. continued: http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/08/27...t.ap/index.html So it goes |

That's why the government was subsidizing it in the first place, no company is going to invest in something that can't cure anything (fetal stem cell research). The article says they grew the new bone out of his own bone marrow, thus, adult stem cells. Fetal stem cells is what people are opposed to. | Hrm... Location: MN Posts: 445 | Bah we can get fetal stem cells from cord blood. People aren't opposed to that. What they're against is using stem cells (fetal or adult) to create zygotes from which to extract even more stem cells. Also, do you have a link Comrade of the successes and failures of both types? Where did you get your info? Interested, LL "Statistics show that of those who contract the habit of eating, very few survive." -- Wallace Irwin |

Religious issue maybe. By govt supporting, or not support the research it could be said govt is making religious based decisions, whatever. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! |
