The Brain and Dreams

I find teh following story intresting, though it's old:

Quote:
After 50 years, the veil begins to lift on our dreams
....the active limbic system would explain why REM dreams
are so emotionally charged and the amygdala in particular helps
explain why the emotional content of dreams is so often negative --
dreams of fleeing from a dangerous animal or person, or dreams of
being unprepared for a test.
Meanwhile, the shutdown of the brain's rational prefrontal cortex
helped explain why dreams often are nonsensical and have distorted
time sequences. Because that part of the brain is also crucial for forming short-term memories, its deactivation no doubt contributes to people's difficulty in remembering their dreams.
This explains much more than "spiritual" theories regarding dreams, does it not?

I just had a dream that I was on an episode of Seinfeld. Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer, were all there so I guess that made me George? Anyway, the episode was about gigantic muffins at a local bakery. Jerry wanted to know "what growth hormones they were feeding the muffins". I think the weirdest part of the dream though, was the laugh track.

I had a dream Obama grew one horn on the side on his head and his face was contorted, like swirled around in one of those computer programs. Strange. When I woke up, I saw that I had fallen asleep with the television on FOX News. It all made sense.

Yup, that makes sense. I read somewhere that the most common dreams are being unprepared for an academic activity, trying to perform a task but to no avail, running from something/someone, falling a great distance, and...... uh... a sex dream...

During whole my life I have had dreams about planes. They usually crash, usually in my neiberhood, but never in my house, never harm me, never people close to my heart.

Also from time to time I dream that I have to move, but I can't and even more often, that I have to run but I'm very slow and cannot speed up.

Those sex dreams sure are a double-edged sword. They are usually awesome when you are having them but then it is so disappointing when you realize that is was just a dream.

Me too. It's like I have no traction. Weird.

What spiritual theories? Freud himself tried to guess at what neural circuitry would look like and if he was alive today I'm sure he'd be a very happy psychiatrist if he saw this. Jung would be annoyed, but nobody likes Jung. He hasn't been cool since day one because even back then educated people had a pretty good idea that the brain was some sort of elaborate computational clockwork.

I think it goes without saying the any suggestion to invade Canada is mind-numbingly stupid.

Freud was mentally deranged from syphilis and Jung was a neurotic, misogynist dreamer whose mother saw 'spirits' in the night. Isn't it telling how some of the most acclaimed psychoanalysts are also some of the most certifiable whack jobs known to man?

There is only one right answer and, yet, you still argue with me..

I'm the proof that evolution works...

You're the proof that it doesn't.

"Fitting" is more like it. But at least these people read, and thought. Some were influential on each other. Nietzsche influenced Freud, Jung, Mann, Michel
Fouceau, Camus, and Wittgenstein. Also, you should define "whackjob." In my experience that could describe virtually anyone.

You forgot cocaine.

Someone with more eloquence than I have once said there is a very fine line between just being insane and being a genius. Freud explored both sides of that line on a regular basis. A less bizarre character would probably never have realized the things he did.

What would he have written had he smoked crack cocaine (from what I understand there is a difference)?

I remember that dreams is the mind's way of going over past events.

Interesting.

Coincidentally I have been having the most bizarre dreams this week. And for the first time ever, my dreams connected directly with reality. My dalmation died sunday, and on sunday night (well actually I went to bed at 1 AM on monday morning) I dreamt about him running away from me.

A nice dream

Quote:
One day about sunset, Zhuangzi dozed off and dreamed that he turned into a butterfly.

He flapped his wings and sure enough he was a butterfly...

What a joy full feeling as he fluttered about, he completely forgot that he was Zhuangzi.

Soon though, he realized that that proud butterfly was really Zhuangzi who dreamed he was a butterfly, or was it a butterfly who dreamed he was Zhuangzi

Maybe Zhuangzi was the butterfly, and maybe the butterfly was Zhungzi? This is what is meant by the "transformation of things."
My favourite dreams are when i know i´m dreaming and i decide to go flying, the slightest turn of my hands can change my direction, and I
fly like an Eagle
