What Could Happen If LHC Has A Malfunction During 2009 Dangerous Experiments?

I am still waiting for a logical discussion, in regard to Page 6 Comment #118.

What could be the ramifications from an LHC malfunction, during more dangerous experiments within the 2009 projected schedule of experiments?
There are a million variable combinations!
What if all LHC emergency shut-down safety systems fail at the same time, due to seperate cascading malfunctions?
Is there anyway to assess this randomly complex possibility outcome?

An escaped beam could melt a few billion dollars worth of expensive equipment...maybe melt a few employees...

Particle beams expand quickly in air so you'd have a gigantic x-ray hued flamethrower. Trapped in a tunnel under 50 feet of dirt with a radioactive plasma jet is not my idea of a good time.

You could also leak a lot of helium instead of a little. We don't think of it as dangerous but it's a poor replacement for oxygen and can kill people if they're in a confined space.

Hmm...lastly there's the fields. These are really big magnets. A wrench that's going nearly the speed of sound on it's way to a magnet could hurt somebody, and even when they're not "on" you need to be careful. Accidents happen all the time around MRI machines.

I think it goes without saying the any suggestion to invade Canada is mind-numbingly stupid.

The Wright brothers had no way to assess other than trying out their plane. Testing.

Do you think the moon landings were faked? Does Fermilab have these shutdowns that are so worrying? Do they "lose the beam"? How many have been hurt there? Fermilab « Life as a Physicist

CERN LHC is Shrouded in a Haze of Theoretical Mathematics

With a portion of the 'Standard Model' missing, and with the theoretical-mathematic extrapolations shrouded within a haze of theoretical speculation (guessing), there is absolutely no way of telling what awaits the experiments at CERN LHC!
If General and Special Relativity are apart of any flaw within the understanding of LHC design engineering, then it becomes possible that the analytical equipment could change size, shape, and even Time-reference, with only an outside observer to witness any anomalies that were in occurence!
Therefore, a paradox has arisen. The LHC has been designed and built upon the current interpretations of the 'Standard Model', and if there are 'no' major flaws, then everything should react as anticipated. However, if there are any major misinterpretations within this foundation model, then your guess becomes as good as any qualified scientist, as to the outcomes of these experiments!

CERN LHC News Article: "The Grid We Live In"

According to Nobel Prize winner Frank Wilczek, the best description of our Universe is a matrix.
CERN LHC currently under repairs, with a scheduled restart date for Spring 2009, is the best chance for us to discover the true nature of this matrix.
"The Matrix" movie could hold more truth than we would care to believe!

Malfunction caused by human error? One poor soldering connection out of 10,000 cost them dearly!

Thanks for all the links. I'm a little bit better versed on the LHC now, but I still have more to go. And the posts here have been amusing.

One random question -- are scientists so sure that gravity is explained as a force involving the exchange of particles?

Ya, ya, I know. That's why they're testing.

CERN LHC: Gravity - Reply To Proteus Comment

October 10th, 2008

Proteus: You have asked the $7B-$10B dollar question! All actual elements of the LHC debate, including the Higgs Boson and Standard Model design, revolve around the central question concerning the interpretation of Gravity!

Most people are not aware that the safety concerns regarding the LHC, are being caused by this question of Gravity, and has caused several decades of intensely over-heated debates.

1. Is Gravity an independent-universal particle/wave field of energy emanating by and through our known Universe?

2. Is Gravity nothing more than a reactionary force, caused by the curvature of the fabric of Space/Time around Matter/Mass, and not an independent force at all?

3. Or is it a combination of both #1 & #2, thus being somehow intertwined?

This interpretation is critical in establishing the expectation of any experimental outcome. If you don't already possess this answer in advance, then there is 'no' theoretical-mathematic way to deduce the probability of any experimental outcome!

One man's interpretation, is another man's delusional fantasy, and the divisional physic's camps have drawn their lines in the sand!

Note: This question is not extremely important, until the LHC's 'real' full-power ALICE heavy Lead (Pb) ion collisions, scheduled for late 2009; after the re-start schedule for Spring 2009. These experiments can affect, and be affected by gravitational forces!

CERN LHC: Let's Debate While You Wait!

There is still much building anticipation for the scheduled Spring 2009 LHC collision re-start program! It will have a way of getting here, and before we know it.

The CERN Super-Computer known as the 'GRID', is the world's largest and most complex system known to man. The main key-element is the use of fibre-optic cables, to transmit 'light' encoded information at near the speed of light.

The system has been designed in Tier formation, in order to upload to other computers around the world; thus creating the ultimate Super-Computer!

Risk: These complexities could lead to incorrect system evaluations, or a host of other invalid assessments, which could cascade toward failure.

This appears to be traveling in the direction of Artificial Intelligence, which means the possibility of random self-awareness in it's function.

Could it begin to truly think as the project evolves through time???

--------------------------------------

While we await the re-start date, here is an inside look into the world of CERN:

While I appreciate periodic updates on CERN I think you're being paranoid. I think raw computational power is not enough to make a human-like mind.
