Mono

Is it true that when you get mono, the EVB never goes away and you can never safely kiss anyone? Its sort of a personal issue for me, I had mono 6 months ago and my girlfriend says we can never kiss because she is afraid of getting mono. Is she right?

Yep, it's all over now. Hope you had fun while it lasted. Such a shame, so young too. :(

Prevention

Though good personal hygiene makes sense, especially among teenagers, the Epstein-Barr virus is everywhere, and exposure to it cannot be entirely avoided.

* People with mononucleosis do not need to be isolated from others.

Mono can be spread through contact with saliva, mucus from the nose and throat, and sometimes tears. Because the virus can be spread through kissing, it has earned the nickname the "kissing disease." If you have mono, you can avoid passing the virus to others by not kissing anyone and by not sharing things like glasses, eating utensils, or toothbrushes.

As soon as you get over mono, your symptoms will go away for good, but you will always carry the virus that caused it. The virus may become active from time to time without causing any symptoms. When the virus is active, it can be spread to others.
Infectious Mononucleosis-Topic Overview

It appears once the virus is inactive, you're safe. Have her ask her own doctor just to put her mind to rest.

No. But I think you mean EBV, the Epstein-Barr virus.

No. After 6 months you are not infectious. But what will not go away are the antibodies that you developed that eventually killed the virus. You are now effectively immune to mono. Even though the actual levels of the antibodies may diminish, your immune system has now "learned" how to react to the virus and future exposures will result in immediate virus killing antibody production in quantities that make will make infection impossible.

Probably not. But I can check with my son's best friend, a doctor that specializes in infectious diseases if you want. I think that you were infectious before you had symptoms, but not after they were gone. In fact, you probably were no longer infectious a bit before you felt well.

Better still, ask your own doctor. Just call.

Better still yet, get a new girlfriend who doesn't rely on urban legends for her health care.
