Surgery going well for girl in India with 4 arms, 4 legs, doctors say

Quote:
Doctors in India operating Tuesday on a two-year-old girl born with four arms and four legs say the surgery is progressing well.

Surgeons are in the early stages of an extensive operation to remove the extra limbs, organs and other body parts of the child's so-called "parasitic twin."

The girl is basically attached to a twin who stopped developing in their mother's womb.

As the surviving fetus, the girl — identified only as Lakshmi — absorbed the legs, arms and organs such as kidneys of the undeveloped fetus.

"It's a big team effort of a lot of skilled surgeons who will be putting their heart and soul into solving the problem," said Dr. Sharan Patil, the lead surgeon in the operation. "It's going to take many, many hours on a continuous basis to operate on the baby. So, these issues definitely make it complex."

The complications for Lakshmi's surgery are myriad: The two spines are merged, she has four kidneys, entangled nerves, two stomach cavities and two chest cavities. She cannot stand up or walk.

Lakshmi is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth, and some in her village in the northern state of Bihar revere her.

"Everybody considers her a goddess at our village," said her father, Shambhu, who goes by one name. "All this expenditure has happened to make her normal. So far, everything is fine."

Others sought to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy the girl, they said.

'A very cute girl'

Patil put the risk of losing Lakshmi between 20 and 25 per cent.

Doctors at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore, where Lakshmi is undergoing surgery, said she is popular among the medical staff and other patients.

"She's a very cute girl," Dr. Patil Mamatha said. "She's very playful and gets along well with others."

The hospital's foundation is paying for the operation because the girl's family could not afford the medical bills, Mamatha said.

A team of 30 doctors was participating in the surgery.
Sounds interesting. I wonder how it will turn out. I have seen operations on parasitic twins, but most were joined at the head, and was only the brain to really worry about when it came to seperation. This one seems much more complicated.

There were a couple of conjoined twins who had their spinal cord fused at the base. 2.5 lungs and two complete heads. The head on the right had control of the right leg and hand and the head on the left had control of the left leg and hand. They were able to walk and tie their shoes. They had two distinct personalities, as per their parents...

As was explained, the cult already exists. The 4 armed goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, already exists. As was explained, some people of her village already "revere" her as the goddess. It probably doesn't help that her parents gave her the name of the goddess.

You know it's actually quite interesting, because recently in the last 10 years or so, I have been stumbling across a lot of reports of odd births in India.... from paracitic twins like this one, to other odd deformities at birth..... I have been wondering if there is somethng going on there in India to cause this, or are these reports just getting more notice from India?

I would assume that she can't.... or very well at least.

Update:

Surgery on girl born with 8 limbs went 'wonderfully well'

Quote:
Doctors in India completed a gruelling 24-hour operation Wednesday on a girl born with four arms and four legs, and surgeons said the two-year-old — revered by many as a reincarnated goddess — has a chance at a normal life.

The surgery went "wonderfully well," said Dr. Sharan Patil, who led a team of more than 30 surgeons at a hospital in the southern city of Bangalore that performed the marathon procedure to remove the child's extra limbs, salvage her organs and rebuild her pelvis area.

Doctors say the operation will give Lakshmi, a girl from rural northern India, a chance to start life again after two years in which her parents hid her from deeply superstitious villagers — who alternately revered her as a Hindu deity and tried to buy her for a circus.

"This girl can now lead as good a life as anyone else," Patil said from the hospital.

But he cautioned that Lakshmi was still not out of danger.

"We are still not ready to celebrate as she will be in the critical zone for the next 48 to 72 hours," the doctor said.

Lakshmi was born joined at the pelvis to a "parasitic twin" that stopped developing in the mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and some other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

"This is a very rare occurrence," said pediatric surgeon Dr. Doug Miniati at the University of California, San Francisco.

Miniati, who was not involved in the surgery, said it was extremely complicated but her chances of survival were greater because she had not been joined with the other fetus at the heart or brain.

The doctors worked through the night to remove the extra limbs and organs.

By midnight, a team of neurologists had separated the fused spines while orthopedic surgeons removed most of the "parasite," carefully identifying which organs and internal structures belonged to the girl, Patil said.

Then began the difficult job of reconstructing the girl's lower body.

The operation included transplanting a good kidney into Lakshmi from the twin. The team also used tissue from the twin to help rebuild the pelvic area, one of the most complicated parts of the surgery, said Patil.

"We were able to bring the pelvic bones together successfully, which takes away the need for another procedure," Patil said.

However, Lakshmi will need more treatment and possible surgery for clubbed feet before she will be able to walk, he added.

'A goddess at our village'

Lakshmi's parents, who were expected to see the girl later Wednesday, said they were very relieved.

"It will be great to see our daughter have a normal body," her father Shambhu, who only goes by one name, told reporters. "We were worried for her future."

Children born with deformities in deeply traditional rural parts of India, like Lakshmi's remote village in the northern state of Bihar, are often viewed as reincarnated gods.

The young girl is no different — she is named after the four-armed Hindu goddess of wealth.

"Everybody considers her a goddess at our village," said her father.

However, some wanted to make money from Lakshmi. Her parents said they kept her in hiding after a circus apparently tried to buy her.

Doctors at Sparsh Hospital in Bangalore estimated the surgery cost $625,000 US, but they did it for free because the girl's family could not afford it.

"We are very grateful to all the doctors for seeing our plight and deciding to help us," Shambhu said.

Why and what point of time do conjugation of twins takes place ??

Praxius, it is nice of you to make a thread out of this news.

My question goes more to theists, who believe in supernatural items like souls and spirits etc.

One fertilized egg brakes to form conjugate twins. Before breaking, their RNA/DNA map definitely must have been one and the same. Supernaturally speaking, must be containing only one SOUL before breaking into two . But, on successful breaking into two and further on full term development their RNA/DNA map must have definitely some difference. Also, from supernatural point of view they must contain an individual different soul. Logic says SOUL if at all it exists (One person one soul formula) must be entering/existing in the embreyo after some fixed time on fertilization and not just at the time fertilization Not being a biologist, I do not know this breaking of fertilized egg into two conjugates takes place when and why !!!!!

I am sure modern science too must be puzzled about if not for when but for why of it !!!
