I would assume that the term "big enough to hold 1,000 of our own Solar Systems," refers to the physical dimension of the event horizon or Swartzchild radius, since a black hole is, by definition, a singularity.

Yeah, but astronomers think that most SMBs are only millions of times the solar mass. This one is 10 billion solar masses...

The most impressive part is the age. It is 12.7 billion years old.
The universe is only believed to be 13.7 billion years old.

That is old.. would explain how it grew to that size. Suppose there is a black hole in the oldest known galaxy, (Abell 1835 IR1916), that might also be über-massive, since the galaxy is 13.23 billion years old...
