I was just wondering what people think about researching/using stem cells? I for one would really like to see more in this area. If we can grow organs/heal old ones, then I'm all for it.

Ethical questions do come up (ever read brave new world), but I think such questions come with any useful piece of science.

Power corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I think it's a bad idea. We're supposed to die. Our fear of death is what creates most of our problems.

Err, everyone dies but it is how we die that matters, I'm sure most people wouldn't want to live out the last few years bound to a wheelchair or with mental disabilities, Stem Cell research doesn't offer immortality imo, it can lengthen lives of course but why wouldn't you want that?

Rox, those words were probably spoken back when we came up with the first chemical medicines, first surgery, etc etc. But I do see what you mean - where to draw the line?

I think it's something we shouldn't overlook, that's for sure. Maybe try hard to regulate and create laws on what it can be used for? I don't know.

You have a good point. But this stuff just scares the crap out of me.
It's not that I think it's immoral. It's just the lack of angels we have in positions of power. I don't know either....

I don't have any problem with the research, as long as they aren't harvesting the cells from killed humans.

Stem cell research is being done in many countries on this planet. No human is killed to continue this research unless you actually believe that a fertilized cell in a petrie dish is a human being. We have had women donating their eggs for years to be allowed to be fertilized within a lab and then used for their healing powers of many children's diseases and accident victims.

I love it when a bunch of posters on the internet want to play God and tell our American scientists that they can or cannot use their brains to develop cures for all the problems facing our American population.

Where does this out of control ego come from? Spare me a bible quote!

You're saying that the people asking the tough questions are playing God and not big pharma? Interesting. And which bible quotes are you talking about? I haven't seen any in this thread.

He wasn't addressing you Roxdog (currently the only opposed). Anyway, let us query this fear you have of this proliferating new technique. What new powers can we acquire from it that scares you so much?
