| So given that people prefer living in bedroom communities and commuting to work, and given that value of homestead increases with distance from urban areas where industry/service is concentrated, efficient cars will do nothing to decrease energy consumption or save the environment.
Why? Because they make it easier for people to live farther and drive longer each day. It's the same problem with expanding highways. Society readjusts farther away, driving more miles, returning to the gridlock.
Government interference is just pointless because their "solution" doesn't really solve the problem. The solution must come from a change in culture, not from regulation. And the best way to get culture to change is to let the problems happen and keep information available and presume that people are intelligent enough to adjust their lifestyle to deal with it. |
