Apple iPhone warning proves true

BBC NEWS | Technology | Apple iPhone warning proves true

Quote:
An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.

Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".

Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.

There are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iPhones.

On Monday Apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs caused "irreparable damage" to the device's software.

The company said this would "likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed".

That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.

Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.

Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.
What a crock of shat!

And people complained about Microsoft and their monopoly, Apple just screwed over thousands of people who paid for the phone who decided they wanted a "choice" in their providers.

I would be asking for my dam money back if it was me..... but since it is me, I was smart enough not to buy into the hype of the phone.... as I figured from day one of the announcement of the IPhone there were gonna be issues.

I am sure that there will be a hack for a new update pretty soon.

That would be a logical direction.

I don't understand why they want to isolate their service just to AT&T anyways?

Doesn't matter.

It's understood that when you're buying the iPhone that you're locked into a certain service provider.

By hacking the iPhone, any service contracts and warranties on the product become void. So if Apple wants to create an update that disables the device if it was hacked, that's their choice.

Personally, I say good for Apple.

IT'S A BOY!!

I say good far all involved, and us spectators as well.

We're all learning a valuable lesson.

We can potentially learn future lessons from this. If the consumer sucks it up, and continues to support this type of behavior, they can get even more where that came from.

Like a secure investment in their future.

Apple has a monopoly? Their iPhone is a tiny, tiny percentage of the US wireless market. By what reasonable definition do they have a monopoly?

Apple didn't screw over anyone. They sold a phone with the understanding that it was only to be used on the AT&T network in the United States. Customers who willfully and intentionally broke that term of the contract are having trouble with their phones. Apple is being nice - they could have simply done like the cable companies used to do - sent a "bullet" to any phones that weren't using AT&T and killed them all.

Why? Because you violated the contract?

Yes there are significant issues - many of them stemming from Apple's choice of AT&T for a provider partner. The slow internet, the shitty phone, etc.

I don't understand the hype anyway - the iPhone doesn't do anything more than a decent PDA has been able to do for years.

AT&T was the only US provider willing to give Apple a piece of every activation.

I have the iPhone. I already had AT&T so I didn't mind that they restricted it to AT&T.

It really wasn't as expensive as I was planning it to be, I bought it the day after they lowered the price to $400.

It's a great phone, don't listen to all the anti-iPhone hype you hear, it's definitely the most useful phone I've ever had.

I'm sure it's a great phone in terms of hardware, but I would never want to be stuck with AT&T as a service provider, their network is inferior and their customer service is lousy.
