Hybrid embryo research likely to be approved

Hybrid embryo research likely to be approved - Telegraph

Quote:
Research using hybrid embryos is likely to be given the go-ahead this week after warnings it would be a major blow to British science if the Government watchdog refused to allow it.

Researcher aim to create stem cells which can be manipulated in the laboratory to mimic human cells

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) will decide on Wednesday whether to permit scientists to create human-animal hybrid embryos to extract stem cells for research.

What the hell is the point of making a hybrid? this isn't medecine at that point, it's just fooling around with life for the sake of it.

Creepy and disgusting.

I don't know. On the other hand, how much do you know about stem cell research that leads you to believe that there is no point? Please tell us about your background in genetics, molecular biology, cellular physiology, and medicine that makes your opinion meaningful.

If you say so, but I don't know what medecine is. On the other hand, this is medical research.

To paraphrase you, what the hell is the point of doing that?

Of course, medical research has been creepy and disgusting (not to mention sinful) for fundamental christians for hundreds of years. If one contracts a disease and dies, it is god's will. We are not to question. Plague and disease are god's ways of showing his displeasure with the sinful life styles of those upon whom he/she/it inflicts disease. Disease is neither genetic nor the result of microbial infection. It is god's punishment for sin, even if many victims die as infants and children. They would have committed unforgivable sin if god had allowed them to live.

Umm, I haven't presented an opinion I have to back up, I asked a question, (what the hell) If you could provide me with a reason for the research I might reconsider.

Indeed, what's the point.

Ah yes, I remember hearing a while ago that there was an application being made for permission to conduct this research. I'm glad science seems to be winning over emotion and ignorance here.

As for the purpose of the research, try reading the full article:
Quote:
The aim is to create stem cells which can be manipulated in the laboratory to mimic human cells with genetic neurological diseases so potential therapies can be developed.

The only other alternative, Dr Minger said, is to encourage thousands of women to donate their eggs for research. "Ruling against this research would be a real blow for science, not just stem cell research," he said.

"We thought that what we were doing was quite pragmatic. It is more justified than trying to encourage thousands of young women to come forward to undergo a fairly invasive procedure for research. In my opinion that is not realistic and not justified."
It's not messing around with life for the sake of it; it's conducting medical research in order to save lives.

It should enable the testing and changing of the genetic code in humans

Could you ditch the glaring anti-theism for like 10 seconds?
