Persons working for new ideas, innovative techniques, unraveling nature's misteries etc; it is mostly called they are doing Research. I have been always wondering, why it is called Research and not Search. I am thinking they are actually doing Search only...Please tell me why Search has got replaced by Research !!! |

Often the problem comes from the fact that English has both Greek and Roman roots with dashes of other languages thrown in to further confuse us. Flammable and inflammable mean the same thing, though some think the -in would indicate "not". Actually, it's the same -in ZNFYRH mentioned. "Dis" generally means "not" as in disapprove. Does that mean distribute means to not give tribute? I love playing with words like this. There's a good joke based on this concept (works better verbally than written)... Expert...ex, meaning former...spert(sic), a drip under pressure. Thus an expert is a former drip under pressure. And so thinks that "Re" means "return" or "repeat" or "re-due". In other words, to re-hash prior information. Returning to something past in order to find out more about the past. Where as search would be seeking or exploring for something in the future tense. We do not use the word "Reseeking". So perhaps Researching what was already searched is a goofy word. We could make up some new words for Webster. Reseeing. Restudy. Rerevialations. Reknowldege. Reinsight. Remeanings. Reprayers. But - re-interpretations is now used. How about reincarnating a search? Check that out and then recheck it. |

| Volcanic Erupter Posts: 4,375 | "theo" = God "-ist" = believer of "a- " = not "un-" = reversed "anti-" = opposing So... "theist" = believe in God "atheist" = no belief in God "untheist" = former believer in God "anti-theist" = opposes the idea of God "pedotheo" = God-lover "maltheo" = God-hater "theodora" = loved by God Hmmm... time to find some more fun ones that don't actually translate correctly... IT'S A BOY!! |

But Ma, I have had three already and I'm full. What? You no like-a your mother's cooking no more? Anti-pasti - no wonder. | |
