| Volcanic Erupter Location: Hong Kong (for now) Posts: 7,002 | Fruit As Fuel? Fruit could make 'powerful fuel' By Matt McGrath BBC Environment reporter The sugar found in fruit such as apples and oranges can be converted into a new type of low carbon fuel for cars, US scientists have said. The fuel, made from fructose, contains far more energy than ethanol, the scientists write in the journal Nature. Separately, a British report on biofuels says all types of waste products, including plastic bags, can be used to make biodiesel fuel. Critics of biofuels made from plant crops say they drive up food prices. In both the European Union and the United States politicians have heartily embraced biofuels as a way of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and dependency on imported oil. BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Fruit could make 'powerful fuel' Hooray! No more dependency on oil!!! No more unnecessary wars! No more high gas prices! ![]() |

Well, anything that is already highly coveted, and will drive prices up beyong the reach of the average person. Way to go science. |

| Volcanic Erupter Posts: 8,650 | And I live close to Orange County. I would agree the hemp fuel is better because using it would not effect the production or price of food crops now being used. Oranges can be effected seasonaly so the question is can oranges damaged by cold weather still be used for fuel production? Could other crops that get frozen by weather or damaged in floods be converted to fuel. If so, that could save the farmers butt economically when such things happen. The USA distroys some crops to keep the prices up high enough to make farming a economically sound business - can the surplus food be used instead of wasting it? But this is not new news because biofuels have been known about for a long time and are used in some other countries instead of fosil fuel. |
