| moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | dunno if anyone's heard of this, but i just read it in some mit tech magazine today.. it's made by the same people who created kazaa.. unlike cell phone plans that cost a significant amount of money (cuz cell phone operations are expensive to run), and where you get tagged with significant fees if you make international calls - skype is totally different. with this thing, you can make unlimited calls to anyplace in the world for free! apparently, all you need is some pieces of hardware in your computer. i'd assume that in a short while, you'll be able to use something like a palm pilot to make such calls with. check it: http://www.skype.com/skype.html i'm totally getting this when i have to do my study abroad thing for grad school. that way i can still talk to all loved ones whenever i want. |

| Location: Finland Posts: 712 | Another thing that escapes me, is why do two people - with an application like MSN messenger and broadband - still call each other and pay for it? Even without MSN/iChat/****, there are many free applications out there for talking over the 'net, for free! Alright, back to skype...sorry. ![]() |

| moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | i think they've tried to do something like a pc-based telephone many times in the past. i know i've always seen various accessories on windows for phone apps. the only thing is that sometimes it's nice to be able to talk to someone while you're walking to the store or something (i.e. a situation where you won't need a pc handy). heh, i just got excited when i saw it, cuz in fall of 2005, i'm doing a semester abroad, and i'm gonna miss my girlfriend tons. this would negate all those international fees and i'd be able to talk to her whenever i wanted. that's damn good stuff. but even domestically.. once this catches on, it will be something huge imo.... time to think about buying some new stock methinks.. |
