I can pay $2200 for Redhat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 3.0. Or I can simply download it from them. You may investiage that on their ftp server. When you understand the difference between "Free" and "free", you will understand why it doesn't matter what window manager it uses, nor whether it can connect to windows domains. It is entirely more important than that. It is its very Freedom that makes it attractive. Everything else is slavery. Quote:

| projects himself Posts: 130 | nock it off with the 'Free', 'free' thing. that's retarded. of course they don't see a way out. so many admins were bred to leech off of the market that microsoft has developed. it wasn't microsoft alone, but they sure hold a gi-fucking-gantic stake in the buisness. like i said, linux will likely migrate to business because of its UNIX ties. ...yet another person who thinks it's only about linux. commercial unix is the backbone of business, and has been since the birth of computers in business. linux makes it easier and prettier, and i congradulate them for it. they don't have nearly the enterprise software backing that microsoft or commercial unix has. don't get me wrong, linux is decent, but it has a ways to go before it makes significant enterprise takeover. |

alex + linux alex + solaris I've been a professional Solaris administrator for the better part of a decade. I've been a professional Linux administrator since the beginning of 2000. I have been a professional programmer for both platforms for over a decade. I'm the second generation in my family to do so. I'm in fact professionally certified, and I get paid to do both. Linux and Unix have almost nothing in common. The one thing they share is the shell. And even then, you find distinct differences between their shells (ksh and bash for example). Remember, GNU's Not Unix. Please, don't spout off misinformation about subjects you don't know enough about. You've attempted to propagate ignorance and misinformation. Why? Alex

| Hrm... Location: MN Posts: 445 | Holy shit! I didn't think that my opinion, which is exactly what was asked for in the first post, would piss you off so much Alex. Or is there a difference between Alex and alex? Settle down "Statistics show that of those who contract the habit of eating, very few survive." -- Wallace Irwin |

of course, but it's not like making one capitalized is going to notify the reader which concept is to which. thats like italicising it and suggesting that the reader should know how to interpret which meaning the word has. Quote:
congradulations. <!--QuoteBegin-alex,@ Linux and Unix have almost nothing in common. The one thing they share is the shell. And even then, you find distinct differences between their shells. Remember, GNU's Not Unix.
i never said gnu was unix. but don't give me that crap about linux not being similar to unix. how about the permission system? how about the filesystem? the shells are definately NOT the singular joining force. nevertheless, my statements were true, and my opinions have good grounding. linux was based on unix, yes they are similar, yes they have things in common. <!--QuoteBegin-alex, Please, don't spout off misinformation about subjects you don't know enough about. You've attempted to propagate ignorance and misinformation. Why?
please identify my ignorance and misinformation, you are just pointing fingers with this post and not identifying a single thing. you act as if giving some "facts" and saying you're a professional is all that is needed to discredit me.

| Hrm... Location: MN Posts: 445 | Alex, Question! The ONLY reason my server is still running Windows is because I do most of my web programming in ASP/VBScript and ASP.Net/C#. A friend of mine recently told me that it may be possible to host the .asp/.aspx pages on a Linux machine and have them work correctly assuming it had access to a Windows machine that could do the processing. I've seen some pretty amazing shit done with Unix and Linux but I haven't seen that. Is it possible without using Sun's version of ASP? If so do you know where I might be able to find information on getting that done? LL "Statistics show that of those who contract the habit of eating, very few survive." -- Wallace Irwin |
