I think that when a kid is smart at a young age, he or she is overly complimented and encouraged by his or her family. I think this makes for a weird ego.

Yeah, I don't see any convincing correlation either. Though those pirates.. now THAT'S some well thought convincing data. There's no arguing with a graph.

I mean, the study says that they become vegetarians after they are deemed smart... if you are going to become a vegetarian just because you know that alot of people with high IQs do it too, youre just a tool.

Vegetarianism doesn`t suit everyone, and as already mentioned everyone is unique and has different dietary requirements. Eating a small amount of red/white meat would surely be the way to go, cutting down not out. Women definitely need more iron at certain times, so I say give your body what ot needs.

Then make a thread in miscellaneous on what you are craving. This one is about IQ related to vegetarians.

Correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation.
The news report on the study never said it did.

Quote:
It's like looking at the higher number of drownings at the beach and the higher number of ice cream sales at the same beach to conclude that ice cream causes drowning. There's a confounding variable, and the fact that there are more people at the beach because it's hot summer causes the increased drowning.
Sorry for you, your analogy supports the news report and the study`s observations.

First of all, the study never said a high IQ in 10 years old kids causes them to become vegetarians. Since your analogy rests on the word "cause," would you please be kind enough to point out in the report or study the word "cause" or show where "causation" is implied?

The last sentence of yours above supports the study in that it illustrates "tendency" which the study clearly states. As there is a tendency for and greater likelyhood for drownings at the beach on hot summer days, and high ice cream sales on those days, so, too, is there more likelyhood for 10 year old kids with higher IQs to become vegetarians later in life.

The report speaks nothing about "causation." It speaks about tendency and likelyhood -- just as your analogy does.

Quote:
Your study, I think, doesn't consider confounding variables. However, if it just said that there appears to be a strong correlation between the variables, then I suppose it would be okay,...
Go read it again. Where does it say anything about "causation?" If you read it you will see words like "tend to, linked with, associated with, likely, predictor, likelyhood, etc..."

Quote:
Otherwise, studies like these lower the reputation and taint the ethics of the field of statistics.
It merely illustrated a tendency. It did not state causality, so there is no tainting of the field of statistics by this study. The only tainting that has been done, is that by you, is one to analogies and inserting a factor (cause/causality) into the analogy that is not in the target of what the analogy is being applied to.

People with high IQ's are less likely to conform. That's why you see people with higher IQ's are generally more likely to be vegan.

Contrapositively, people with low IQ's are more likely to conform, and therefore eat meat.

No, you make the impression of causality by saying "Kids With High IQs Grow Up to Be Vegetarians" in a sort of definite relationship, i.e. causation, between vegetarianism and high IQ. I've simply warned you against that while naming a frequent problem in these sorts of things.

Indeed, often the studies are correct in saying there's only a correlation; even this one is probably like that as well. However, when people misinterpret conclusions and excitedly make statements of definite causation that the field is tainted.

My problem, then, is that the thread has a misleading aura. Looking back at my quote, I said that if the study simply mentioned a correlation, then everything's okay, but the conclusions shouldn't be misinterpreted.

E, did you read the Yahoo story on it? Obviously you did not. You seem to have just read the title that a news reporter affixed to the study. There is a big difference. Read the story and you will see that there is no causality. The study illustrates the "tendency" of the point in question.

Please show a causality statement within the news story on it or dig up the report and find one there. If I were a betting man, I would say you won`t be able to find it.

But in fairness to you, I, too, hate how editors and reporters sometimes title the stories they print. Those are misleading at times (like this title), but in this case the study is not, and even the body of the story is not.

Right, and because of the title, that is why people are quick to combat it without reading the article, because you've heard the term, "The title says it all." This causes people to consider the story to be false, automatically, therefore they don't read, or in many cases, they do read it, but find the source to be misinformative in the title name which questions the validity of that particular news source.

Yes, but I would hope that most persons past the age of 20 have come to realize that eidtors title to catch eyes. I think we learned that at 16 years old in our Current Affairs class.

Perhaps those who seldom read news stories have never realized what editors do with news articles and those are the gullible people influenced by the media. They have not yet learned to read criticaly.

Is it that they have not learned to ead critically, or is it more so that they don't trust that particular media outlet? I think the gullible ones are the ones who read the articles, and then automatically label them as true.

As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.

British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.

Luckily these brainy kids had hundreds of generations of forefathers who ate as much meat as they could stuff in. This insured plenty of protein to build and keep those witty brain cells working, growing and being passed on to subsequent generations.

In my present medicated stupor, I am inclined to believe this topic to be more indicative of one's propensity to desperately flout any transient proof of the rationality behind one's preferences, when all that is really needed is for one to develop a comfort level with those preferences, acknowledging them, and then, behaving appropriately, given the society one chooses to participate in, and reap the benefits of that participation with a conscience unburdened by the victimization of others as a result of one's own self-indulgences.

Yeah? Well, I TOLD you I was medicated......

Carry on
