This thing is very stupid how the governemtn gets to tax you for what. they arent even doing anything they are just riding the piggy all the way to the bank. its ther companies that realyl do the work. the gov't should not really have an influential tax on it. i lookd at my bill and there like 15$ in gov't taxes + the 40 i pay for my service. the gov't should get like a fraction of that they shouldnt be able to charge it when they dont even do anything

I'm sure they've got a legitimate reason to do it, and if they don't we vote them out of power? After all, we do live in a democracy...don't we?

I'm not thrilled about paying the taxes to the govt, but they have to make money somehow...

If it bothers you, leave.
I for one wish I could run a radio station without a permit, because permits cost too much... cell phones, I couldn't care less about.

I went to Radio/Broadcasting school, and it was said that there is very limited "bandwidth" on the spectrum to actually broadcast things. Technically it does belong to all of us, but communication would be almost impossible without organizing it in some manner. This ensures that public, private, emergency, and future expansion will be able to function without stepping on eachother.

The amount is still high. Like a vice tax or something. Same for home phone lines, which is especially bad as they are a necessity.

I'm not sure how it works in the states but as far as I know companies here bid a certain amount to buy a piece of spectrum, and they get the right to use that frequency. anyone who wants to buy their products and use them eg cell phone compnies charge a monthly charge or a charge based on usage. As far as I'm concnerend the govt doesn't have the right to tax you for something they have effectively rented/sold off to a third party for the third party to make profit out of....in effect the public would be being charged twice.

I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs and insanity for everyone, but its always worked for me.

I personally don’t own a cell phone, Lessthan, yet I still feel your pain. $15 does sound high. The way you had phrased your poll question I was force to vote “YES”, though. The government has the right to get some taxes. I would possible support lowering the taxes on cell phones if I studied the numbers first. The problem is the government will simply squeeze the money from elsewhere. I would agree that nickel and dimming has got to stop. Taxes should be given to the government like someone would take off a Band-Aid, quickly and all at once.

Home phones are NOT a necessity. You can live without a phone. What the hell do you think people in 1000AD did?

there's the thing--i think some of us feel such powerlessness in our gov't because most of us aren't literate in government that the only tool we have is to complain. every time someone has been in office it seems we're voting for "the lesser of two evils", plus the damn electoral college seems to be the final deciding factor, which can make all of our votes null. to get voted from both the conservatives and liberals, you gotta be in the middle of the road when it comes to platforms. therefore, all we have in power are conservative middle of the road don't wanna decide anything bitches. i believe in voting and do, because i don't think anyone who is legal to vote and doesn't but still bitches ought to be slapped.
plus, how do you start a revolution?
genuine question--any answers?
as far as my own opinion on the cell phone-tax thing--i think taxes on cell phones are fine, because it can go towards social programs and other good causes [of course, there's bad causes, like the Bush presidential campaign, but i'm getting off topic...]
