Meteor Coming In 7 Years At A Near Miss

Hey all there's a meteor headed to Earth. It's going to have a near-miss hit in 7 years perhaps. Saw it in a popular Mechanics. What's everyone thinking?:)

I heard it was 50 years from my chemistry teacher, but oh well. She defined near miss as 50,000 miles away.

Here are some facts:

Cambridge Conference Correspondence

Other near misses come about 450,000 miles from earth. By contrast the moon is 125,000 miles from earth. So I wouldn't bet the farm on the destruction of Earth in 2045. As in the Ray Bradbury's Sci Fi, The Illustrated Man, don't poison the kids just yet.

No worries, mate.

Is that going to be a near miss or a hit? You don't give enough information to make even the most useless speculation. Let's see. There are 829 to 831 known Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) that pass within 0.05 AU of the earth (that's about 46.5 million miles). Between now and 2178 there will be 1485 close approaches to earth. However, 7 years from now will be 2013. In that year there will be 12 close approaches, the closest of which will be a bit more than 1.6 million miles. On Oct 30 of this year a 10m asteroid passed within 0.7 LD (that's 0.7 Lunar Distance, about 167.2 thousand miles) of earth. This information is current as of today, Nov 17, 2006.

By the way, the average distance to the moon is 238,857 mi (384,400 km). It is not a mere 125,000 mi.

Heh, sorry I was quite inaccurate in my questimation. Didn't bother looking it up.

But if an asteriod was going to hit earth, there isn't sh!t we could do to stop it, unless we are given 10 years in advance to prepare, and send a ship to disrupt the asteriod's path/orbit. Correct me as needed. =D

No link to the PM article?

As George Carlin would say:
"That aint no near miss my friends.........Thats a near hit"
(speaking of airliners)

Anything about the size? Could it, at the very least, cause violent storms? Affect a polarity shift? Wobble us slightly off course?
If it affected our moons orbit, it could mean extinction. Floods and tidal waves.

This could be our proverbial chickens coming home to roost

* Preachers will blather on about the end times.
* We'll see bits through our atmosphere for weeks.
* Another disaster movie resurgence.
* People will hold rooftop parties as it passes by.
* NASA probe to land on surface.
* Pieces of it will sell on eBay for thousands.
* Suicides to join the aliens flying in a saucer behind the asteroid.

I'd like to thank Charlie Hodge, bringing me scarves and water.

Considering some people I've met in life, my advice? Why wait? They can save us from their ":rolleyes: holy" presence right now. Maybe I should start selling tickets?

Once again, why wait? Let's start partying like there's no tomorrow now!:)

What, they're not already doing that? :rolleyes: I'm sure some idiots would buy.

Now, levity aside, I've heard similar stories, but I ain't selling the farm yet. Besides, what would be the point? Yes, we as a species could gettogether, we have plenty of time, and defeat THE ROCK. But, wait, I'm talking about the human race here. Life ain't a movie.I doubt there will be any Bruce Willis moment here. I can only hope, if it happens... sooner or later it just might... it lands smack dab on me. I'd rather not see the long version of this "flick.":eek:

"If" isn't a letter in the alphabet, and alphabets don't contain words. You mean "I". Nice blunder though. My vote for a stupid comment.

@gallo

Good info, there.

I knew that there were already some "near hits" (I'm with George Carlin on the use of "near miss" and "near hit") with asteroids passing between us and Luna, distance-wise.

I'm not terribly concerned about it. That's one of those freak coincidences of probability that will answer, at least for me, many questions.
