| Lord Teh Location: Seattlul, WA Posts: 486 | I was running Vista for a day or two, and found it a lot better than XP. The interface was a lot smoother, and it's much more graphically appealing. It didn't support my wireless card and had some other problems due to incompatibility. I didn't like it enough that I'd actually pay to upgrade, unless it was pretty cheap, which it won't be. For a non-gamer, Mac or Linux has all the applications you need. If you game and want to play 80-90% of games out there, though, you're pretty much forced into windows... although ironically, the Army did make America's Army for Linux. Especially in less developed parts of the world where piracy is rampant (China), if Microsoft does go forward with Genuine Disadvantage, I don't doubt that it will bring about a large shift towards open-source and other alternatives, or they will just stick with XP. OpenOffice/StarOffice's highest percentage of market share is in large enterprises (15% or so), showing that larger organizations are willing to consider alternatives to teh Redmond Beast. |

Maybe when the box craps out and I start using Linux exclusively they will undoubtedly have a lot more drivers for that OS. Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots. |

| Volcanic Erupter Posts: 3,066 | Vista leaked ? No surprize, here. As a matter of fact, anybody can download Vista RTM copy. Just check Google search engine, and you can grab your one, as well :-) The major flaw : no solid protection, so far. Vista's "Defender" is a joke and good for kids. If one has a desire to go to Any site, then "Defender" becomes useless, since a system would get hit with ease in no-time. Examples : Symantec's NIS is a heavy-usage-and-power-resources-hungry horse. Then, for entry and/or mid-level systems it may slow and/or choke them easily down. Kaspersky has not (officially) released its software yet. More ? Vista requires some extra hardware, in order a system to performs smoothly. As an example, DirectX v10 supported graphic cards (released by nVidia, lately - 8800GTX, in flavours of 640MB and 768MB respectively) cost appx. $500-650 each :-) CPU along with Memory and Graphic card are crucial hardware components for any computer system. What about CPU or Memory ? All these parts need to represent a certain class and/or category, in order a system to perform well. Having an excellent memory not paired and/or supported by CPU and/or Graphic card, makes no sense at all. All that costs some considerable ammount of funds. Yet, Vista (itself) is a "little" pricey. Ultimate - as a version - is estimated at appx. $400/copy. The positive side ? When it somes to finance, there are not many options left for a common and potential user. However, Microsoft has changed its policy with installing the same copy on different systems, and it goes as follow : - copy May be installed onto a different system Exception : computers can Not be on the same network. |

| Igneous Magma Posts: 305 | Meh, took me forver to upgrade to XP, which as every one will remember was just a prettier version of windows 2000, which I ran for a full year and a half (or was it two years) without needing to format, I could also run every game (literally, being on 2k never once stopped me) and the OS just never died. Then when I did need to format I used a pirated version any way, I refuse to give Microsoft even a cent. My reasoning is this, over the past decade they have displayed a remarkable ability to copy without reward or settlement other peoples ideas, both in thier opperating systems and first party software or 'Sideware' bundled with XP or downloadable from other sites. Explorer has copied other operating systems in the past (Nutscrape) and will copy again soon with IE7.0 (Firefox any one?). No, there really is no need for me to give them money, and I would like to see some one argue the point for me, I buy almost every game I play, I say that because I only ever buy the ones I like ![]() In any case, I would pay Microsoft for a product they owned, be it material or be it property rights of an idea or conception, and lets face it, with Microsoft that will probobly be never.
