Firefox 2 to be released

Quote:
Firefox browser for web 2.0 age
BBC News Online

A new version of the Firefox browser for the web 2.0 age is to make its debut on 24 October.

Built in to the updated software is anti-phishing technology, to prevent fraud, as well as built-in spell checking and a search engine manager.

It is released less than a week after Microsoft unveiled Internet Explorer 7.

The Mozilla Corporation, which oversees the development of Firefox, says more than one million people helped refine the final release.

Firefox 2 is released at 1700 PST (0100 BST).

User testing

The first version of Firefox was released in November 2004 and since then has steadily been chipping away at the dominance of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.

Now it is believed to enjoy a 12-15% market share of the net browsing market globally. But, said Mike Schroepfer, vice-president of engineering at Mozilla, in some nations the share is far higher.

Mr Schroepfer said that there were about 12 big improvements in Firefox 2.0 along with thousands of minor tweaks and bug fixes.

Big changes include a phishing finder that alerts people when they stray on to a site that tries to trick them into handing over login details for a bank or other valuable service.

Another change was a spell checker that keeps an eye on every bit of text typed in almost any Firefox browser box be it in a web-based e-mail program or an add-on that lets people post blog updates directly.

Know what I like best? The spell checker. Hopefully it will make forum reading more enjoyable.

It is particularly difficult to interpret sarcasm when the person writing it does not take the slightest care with his posting. It is an insult to everyone of us that he writes so carelessly. I read his post 2 and 3 times and still am not clear what he is attempting to say.

He is saying 'I'm too busy to even read back my own posting". The ARROGANCE is unbelievable. Even if he used basic punctuation then at least you could figure where one sentence started and finished. There is no excuses for this in this day and age of computer aids. Yet on occasion he can have perfect posting so he has not the excuse of not being able to write good english. It has made me wonder at times if there are different people posting as Shrike.
phoenix_fire, it is either a case of great minds think together or fools seldom differ. I'm for the great minds.

FireFox is great but not quite as good as Google, which I absolutely love.

Just installed FF2, has a nice shiny touch to it. Not noticed anything new apart from that so far though.

I'm confused. Firefox is a browser. Google is a search engine. They are apples to oranges.

At any rate, love firefox.

I've been using a FireFox 2 beta for some time now and for the most part it's a solid piece of work. One thing I do not care for, however, is the new placement of the "close tab" red X. It used to be on the far right hand side of the browser. Now it's on the right side of the tab, so if I'm closing a bunch of old, irrelevant windows in one sequence, the new setup entails much more work.

That annoys me, everytime I go to close a tab I'm infact reaching for the quick tab switch thingy.

Or closing a tab that you didn't intend to close . . . thank Jove for the new tab history thing.

Any idea how it is with memory leaking? I'd been using Firefox for a pretty long time until I finally got fed up with it eating nearly all of my RAM and switched to Opera. I prefer Firefox just for general use - unfortunately, one of the things I preferred about it to Opera was the red X in the top right of the window, rather than on each tab - but it was getting to the point where things were becoming ridiculous, and Opera was a very tidy alternative.

If you're trying to close a bunch of consecutive tabs quickly, the workaround is to find the first one and middle click it's tab so that the next one slides along into its place and lets you do the same again, but it doesn't work so well because the bars keep resizing.

there are some good extentions for tabbed browsing you should check out. I also love the Session Saver extension. It keeps all my tabs when i close mozilla, so i reopen to the same thing.

It's automatically activated for any text you type in website forms. Works just like in a word processor.

I luvx the Firefox now. Only a few more IE compatibility quirks to work out, and I'll be replacing it completely.

It was annoying me as well, so I looked for a fix. In Firefox, open the page "about:config" (without the speech marks) and scroll down to browser.tabs.closeButtons. Right click it and modify its value from 1 to 3 and you should get the X back in the top right corner instead of on each tab. Also, changing it to 0 will show the close button on only the active tab, and 2 will get rid of them entirely.

I'm using it now. No problems so far, and it's good to have most of my extensions running again.

The tabs are great for porn. Instead of having a million different XXX FREE PORN, CUM INSIDE, ect. all lined up on the bottom of my computer, I can hide it in one simple window. Hooray.

Perhaps a virus? They're all executable files. I wouldn't be so quick to run that.
