One of the biggest problems with making computing technology smaller is the display size. One solution is e-Paper. It basically works by impregnating the paper with a charged ink. By running charges through the paper, you change the colour of the ink (usually from white to black and vis versa). They've not got it up to video speeds. Another advantage is the voltage required to run the screens is very low, reducing battery demands.

Nature and Reuters stories about it. Nature explains the process more accurately than I have here.

This has a couple of fairly immediate applications -- most notably brighter flat screens and ebooks.

Another problem which needs to over come is the power supply, but with the advent of the microengine we'll have that problem solved within a decade.
