i would buy one the effects on the planet are reduced if there are any. they seem like thats the way too go as far as car wise. though they are much smaller then normal cars. they are well worth the amount of money that they are. which is not even that much like 20k thats a normal car around.

I can see myself buying one. Depends on costs and perfromance though, rather then enviromental reasons. If it is going to be a decent care and not cost a lot relative to gasoline powered cars, then sure.

^ Good points.

Performance is going to be one of the issues the transition to electric power will face.

I personally would buy an electric were it a viable alternative; if it had what I was looking for in a vehicle - including performance-wise.

One a side note the Honda Insight (one of its new hybrids) is getting like 65 mpg! Electric power will certainly be a more cost-effective option.

I like em. Toyota Prius is now a second generation "hybrid". Very aerodynamic and attention getting.
Honda has a very conventional looking Civic hybrid that is great for those who wish to go about quietly saving gas without calling attention. Insight is tiny but an unbelievable gas miser.
Technology is likely still developing. Check the guarantees...
My opinions.

OH and another thing, I like buying America. Which means either Ford or GM. In a pinch I could see myself buying foriegn, including mixed blood Chrysler. If a bunch of realy great non-gasoline cars were to come out tomarow by foreign companies, and if I was in the market for one, I would still wait up to a couple years to getting an American model.

??

I think that much of any car you buy is built in foreign countries, including Ford, GM and Chrysler/Benz.

Actually they are all multinationals with very little national loyalty. Money has no conscience...

I agree with PH, there no such thing as buying American in the Car Industry. I would defenitely buy an H2 powered car IF it performed like my Jeep. I spend a lot of time in the Mountains and need an engine that performs well. I REFUSE to buy a crackerbox car that wails like a banshee going up the hills with a huge line of cars behind me cursing me out.

yes i see your pointst hat you are brining up with the transition but still they would save you alot of money to even change the performance or buy a newer car once they came out with one that fit your needs

I'm currently saving up to buy one of the new prius hybrids that ph mentioned. These things make great mileage and are really nice. What is especially useful about hybrids is that it now enables me to pay my insurance bills without dying. See in New York being a young male is a general guarantee you'll be paying several thousand a year for car insurance which coupled with high gas prices puts you in the hole a good 5-8 thousand.

long island, a great place to sit in traffic and waste gas.

Also probably the ideal location for a hybrid. The (gas) engine is off when idling.

exactamundo, I won't have to sit in traffic and guzzle down gas.

electric cars have top speeds and accelerations that are comparable to gasoline powered cars. electric cars are also much quieter and they start every time right away. there's no need to go to the gas station because you can plug them in at outlets. they also don't smell like combustion byproducts or give you cancer.

when i buy my next car it will be an electric.

I would be willing to own one if I tried it and liked it. But right now I am finishing my undergrad and will be going to law school next year. I cant afford a car like that.

Unfortunately electrics currently aren't commercially available. Most of what would be available as an electric would be a "conversion" where a savvy hobbyist removes a gas engine from a small sedan or PU, replacing the guts with an electric motor and batteries. They don't really compare well with gas or diesel. Uphill pulls typically run the batteries down fast.

Right now the best designs for fuel economy and stamina are the hybrids.
