    Nuns vs. Vatican

U.S. nuns locked in battle with conservative Vatican leadership

Are you for the nuns or the Vatican?

...a crisis meeting of more than 900 Catholic sisters of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, who represent some 80 per cent of America’s 57,000 nuns, a group attacked by the Vatican for harbouring “radical feminist ideas:” putting too much energy into social justice and too little into fighting abortion, contraception, gay rights and other traditional Catholic anathemas.

They have also dared to discuss women’s ordination, priestly marriage and hot-button political issues such as U.S. President Barack Obama’s health-care plan, to which the church is fiercely opposed.
It seems to me that the nuns, and not the Pope or the Vatican, are representing the ethic and spirit of the Sermon on the Mount preached by Jesus.

    What say you?

By the Pope's own admission the primary business of the Catholic church isn't social issues or spreading the gospel. It's pushing a political agenda in countries around the world. They are more a lobbying group than a religious organization.

The Pope's attitude cheats both Catholics and the citizens of countries like the U.S. It cheats Catholics by exposing as a lie the church's spiritual objectives. It's cheats citizens in being exempt from taxation on their vast properties and expenditures, as well as cheating us of the accountability we demand from any other influence-peddling group who attempts to legislate their agenda.

The Pope ought to be ashamed of himself and another pontiff elected immediately. I admire the focus of the nuns even though I don't agree with the superstitious motivation for their acts of charity.

The Vatican is shooting itself in the foot by pushing that agenda. If they aren't a force for good then they aren't special, and if they aren't special then I'd rather pray to Bill Maher if given the choice.

The more you complain, the less I care about your problems.

Each side is right on some issues and wrong on others. Here is one example of this:

They have also dared to discuss women’s ordination, priestly marriage and hot-button political issues such as U.S. President Barack Obama’s health-care plan, to which the church is fiercely opposed.
The Vatican is right about women's ordination and the nuns are right about priestly marriage. Here are the Biblical requirements for a pastor:

The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
    (1 Timothy 3:1-7 ESV)
The fact that he is to be the husband of one wife shows that he must be male but also must not be prohibited from marrying. Ordination of women and forbidding priests to marry are both violations of the Bible's teaching.

Test everything; hold fast what is good.
    1 Thessalonians 5:21 ESV

Personally, I'd rather see the nuns come to the conclusion that the Vatican, and in fact *ALL* religion is just a bunch of nonsense, that they can be good to people without needing imaginary friends in the sky and tell the Pope where he can shove it.

There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Screw the Vatican. What have they done for anyone, other than donate miniscule amounts to charity? At least nuns dedicate their lives to meaningful service, not sitting in a mansion sipping tea. The Catholic Church has always been a disgustingly corrupt institution. Time to throw it in the trash.
