I have seen it many times, and have been guilty of it myself. Arguing over definitions. It tends to get us nowhere. It also can present a block to understanding when two people are saying the same thing, just in different terms.
I propose a suggestion to further debate and alleviate some pointless back and forth. define your terms. At the very least, be prepared to give a definition.
And I will agree to simply accept a definition if others will as well. I may not agree with the definition, but for the sake of understanding and pointless argument over semantics, Ill just go with it, if I am given the same leverage.
I DO suggest that we get some common, agreed upon definitions to facilitate this. It WILL work if everyone has their own definitions for things, but it will get confusing.
Maybe the general definitions can go here, and discussion can be had about the definitions.
Also, is there a way to edit the original post (this one) for longer than the others? if so, when we agree on a definition, I can edit this post to include it for quick reference.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Is this even feasable or am i just wasting my time with this?
to start, I suggest evidence.
as far as a forum context is concerned, the oxford definition works for me:
the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid
