Iran to publish Holocaust cartoons

IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
"It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.

He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.

"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said.

Iran's fiercely anti-Israeli regime is supportive of so-called Holocaust revisionist historians, who maintain the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as well as other groups during World War II has been either invented or exaggerated.

Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad prompted international anger when he dismissed the systematic slaughter by the Nazis of mainland Europe's Jews as a "myth" used to justify the creation of Israel.

Hmmm, what a brilliant piece of revenge strategy, eh, folks? You just gotta hand it to the Iranian Prez! What a genius. :)

And when the rest of the world fails to give a shit, will they accept that an over-reaction to political cartoons is stupid?

I would be surprised that this would be a divergence from the status quo for Iran. Ooh, the Iranians hate the Jews: big shocker there.

I encourage Iran to do so, it will show the world how Christians and Jews behave when offensive material is printed against them. It will also shows the world how ignorant Middle Eastern leaders are, "The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said. Not all western papers printed the cartoons. In fact, very few in the US did. A few in Europe did. The Iranian president took the opportunity to stereotype the west in saying all western papers printed the cartoons when in fact they didn't. I wonder what his reaction will be when he realizes the world doesn't give a shit.

I think any reaction, no matter how small, will be met with "See, told you so!".

We won't react (since we're used to that kind of crap, since that's our culture), and they will quietly ignore it, and nothing will happen. Shocking.

The fact of the matter is I've tested the waters by portraying a Jewish stereotype in a post.

What happens is the post gets deleted and my posting privilege remains or the post gets deleted and I'm banned from the website.

This is one of the better message boards, I got banned from others.

So far I haven't been able to get anyone with guts enough to leave my post of the stereotype on the web for all to see.

It proves something.

Well, let's see how the Jewish people and the western countries react to the Iranian cartoons, shall we? So far no one is calling for blood. Contrast this with the Muslim reaction to the Danish cartoons.

All it proves is the obvious; freedom of the press and freedom of speech are not relevant when you're posting on a privately owned message board on the Internet. Most forums have rules that must be followed or your account will be suspended or closed.
Post your statements on your own Website and you won't be censored. You may however receive quite a lot of negative feedback.

Anyone remember Martin Scorsese's Last temptation of Christ? A lot of people went apeshit, as they did over Monty Python's Life of Brian. (Or remember what happened to Americans post-911 who suggested that maybe it wasn't the greatest atrocity in recorded human history, or that maybe a degree of self-reappraisal was in order, or that maybe their compatroits were over-reacting just a tad?)

In my eyes Muslims across the world have just been making fools of themselves, and have reminded us about some distasteful aspects of their mindset. But we're not that far different ourselves, and we have to watch ourselves constantly so as not to slip back.

I'm anxiously awaiting the determination of Hamshahri's editors to see whether the cartoons of the holocaust will be offensive enough. I don't think the situation is analogous with the Danish publication as in the Iranian case the periodical has announced a contest to offend.

Any cartoon that Iran can come up with will dwarf in comparison to what their anti semetic President has stated publicly about the Holocaust.

If anyone believes that the West will get any more angry over a cartoon than they haven't already become over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statement concerning the Holocaust, they perhaps don't understand the difference between cartoons and hatred.

Apparently some visual stimulation helps provoke other things too. If Muslims argue the pictures shouldn't have been published for the offense they caused (which was unintended), shouldn't such Muslims refrain from publishing with the intent to offend?

But it WILL have these Iranian jokesters slapping each other on the backs going, "It's funny cause it's true, ha ha ha..." You know those wacky Iranians.

And not a one of them will see that they will be exactly what they condemn in others. These fellers sure can sell a religion, can't they?

Of course Iran chooses to go after the small Jewish population (attacking the people rather than the religion) rather than the majorities of the West.

Anti-semetic cartoons and media already get published regularly throughout the Arab world. "The Jew" as the evil character makes regular appearances. Many TV shows with "the Jew" are laughably crude, with cut and paste animation between cartoon and real life, but the message is clear; showing brave Muslims sucessfully fighting back against his mischief. 2 Minutes Hate anyone?

Not the Holocaust as that is a completely seperate issue, but I was thinking these Arabs would have to work pretty hard to even equal the jokes about Jews done by American Jewish comedians. They want to make jokes they best know they're messing with the pros.

I was just sitting here thinking the same thing. Maybe Iran won't take the humor angle as we naturally expect they would. Does the Iranian newspaper take world-wide submissions, or only those in the home country? What's the KKK up do these days? Been kinda hush-hush lately. Any of 'em fancy themselves as writers?

The only way I can think of to make this whole situation more absurd, is that some Arab guy goes to a Klan site and submits one of their masterworks as his own. Then, the Klan sues over intellectual property or copywrites.
